HAMDEN, Conn. - The Seton Hall tennis team began its fall season at the Quinnipiac Invitational on Friday. Doubles play kicked things off on day one of the tournament and both Pirates' doubles pairs are in contention for their respective bracket titles.
Freshmen Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) teamed up with classmate Pui Wing Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) in the Flight "A" bracket. The neophytes took down Rhode Island's Christen Cadigan and Tristany Leikem, 8-3, in the opening round before knocking off Army's duo of Emily Stein and and Annie Hang, 8-5. Portela and Sher will face Carolina Koladzyn and Monica Yajima from Fairfield in the semifinals.
In Flight "B," senior Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) and sophomore Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) also reached the semis after topping Nikki Jackson and Victoria Pirrello from Fairfield, 8-5, in the first round. The pair went on to beat UConn's Sarah Griffin and Emily Searle, 8-4. They will take on Audrey Hanson and Robie Verano from Army tomorrow.
Due to SHU travelling with just five players, junior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) paired with Fordham's Jennifer Mullins in the "B" bracket. The couple dropped its first match to Marie Gargiulo and Lauren Rothermich from UConn, 8-1, but rebounded in their consolation match and topped the pair of Brooke Hoover and Jenna Williams from Rhode Island, 8-4. Verow and Mullins will continue in the consolation portion of the bracket on Saturday.
Singles play at the Quinnipiac Invitational will start tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. followed by another round of doubles matches.
