
Tennis Opens Up Play at USTA Collegiate Invitational

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Seton Hall tennis team began competition at the USTA Collegiate Invitational at the U.S. Tennis Center on Saturday. The Pirates' duo of Pui Wing Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) and Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) remain in contention for a "C" flight doubles championship at the event.
Sher and Portela defeated Dara Lahens and Alexandra Pavlovic from LIU, 8-2, in the opening round. Next, they topped Katherine Attwell and Haley Dixon from Boston College in a tight match, 9-8(5). The SHU pair started of slow, falling behind, 2-5, then came back to win tie break 7-5 for a 9-8 win. In flight "D" doubles, Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) and Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) lost to Annie Hang and Jurelle Mendoza from Army, 5-8. In the consolation bracket, they bested Fatima Outarra and Zelle Pfeiffer from LIU, 8-5.
Sher also competed in the Flight "B" singles, but came up short against Bianca Sanon from Columbia, 6-1, 6-0. Her doubles partner, Portela, advanced in the "C" portion of play after her opponent defaulted.
Verow lost a heartbreaker to Manuela Leme from FDU in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 11-9, in the Flight "D" portion of play.
In Flight "E" singles, Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, Calif.) lost to Daniella DePaoli from Penn, 6-1, 6-1.
