Tennis Begins Singles Matches at Second Day of Quinnipiac Tournament

HAMDEN C.T. The Seton Hall tennis team started off the second day of the Quinnipiac Tournament with the completion of the doubles round and the start of the singles matches.
The Seton Hall team of junior Denise Liebschner (Weinboehla, Germany) and freshman Elizabeth Verow (Birmingham, England) lost in the semifinals round on Saturday to UConn’s team of Campitiello/Cheung; 8-0. The result of this doubles match came partly because Liebschner was injured at Friday’s doubles match. This affected her ability to play in her flight “A” singles match, causing her to default from the match.
To start off the singles flights, Seton Hall freshman Elizabeth Verow(Birmingham, England) competed in the “A” flight of singles going up against Alice Chen of UMBC. Verow lost her first match; 1-6, 6-2, 10-3. Verow also lost in her consolation match to University of Rhode Island; 8-4. In her final consolation match she lost to Army; 8-6.
Freshman Michelle Weerasinghe (Edina, M.N.) lost her first match in the “B” flight to Joy Adewumi of UMBC; 6-0, 6-4. In Weerasinghe’s first consolation match, she came up with a win against Kristen Liu of Fairfield; 8-2. In her second consolation match she defeated Army; 8-6 and would move on to lose her final consolation match to University of Rhode Island; 8-6.
Also competing in the “B” flight of singles, was senior Danielle Viola (Niagara, N.Y.) who was seeded at the number two spot in her flight bracket. Viola defeated Steinert from Quinnipiac; 6-3, 0-6, 10-6. In the next round Viola came up with another win against Emily Manniz of UMBC; 6-1, 6-2. Her semifinals match will be played on Sunday the last day of the tournament at 9 am.
Starting off the “C” flight was sophomore Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) defeating Barbara Couto from UMBC; 6-0, 6-2. In the next round she defeated Army; 6-0, 6-1. Her semifinals match will also be played on Sunday at 9 am.
Continuing in the “C” flight of singles was freshman Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, C.A.) who won her first match of the day defeating Amanda Granville of Bryant; 6-2, 6-1. Her second win came in the next round against UConn; 6-4, 6-2. Her semifinals match will be played on Sunday at 9 am.
In the final round of singles, in the “D” flight representing Seton Hall was junior Alexandra Harvey(Chatham, N.J.) who defeated Ali Warshovski of Quinnipiac; 6-3, 6-4. In her next round she lost to Caitlin Savoy from FairfieldUniversity; 6-3, 6-0.
The last match of the final flight was sophomore Slavina Kaplanska (Sofia, Bulgaria) who defeated Carly Lowenstein of Quinnipiac; 7-5, 6-1. In her next match she lost to Lauren Hamilton of UMBC; 6-1, 6-2.
The Pirates will go on to finish up the tournament on Sunday, September 21st at 9 am. Several girls will be competing in the semifinal rounds of the singles flights. Sunday will be the last day of the Quinnipiac Tournament.
