Women's Tennis Defeats FDU, 7-0

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall’s women’s tennis team (2-0) held their first home match of the year, competing against Farleigh Dickinson University of Teaneck, New Jersey. The women’s team once again came out on top defeating FDU in a 7-0 decision. This leaves the Pirates undefeated for the fall season at 2-0 in dual matches and FDU at 1-3 for the season.

The afternoon match started off with wins in the doubles round for Seton Hall. Junior Denise Liebschner (Weinboehla, Germany) and freshman Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England)  finished with a win in the doubles competition. Seton Hall defeated FDU in a close match against sophomores Jinny DeCarlos and Dzana Ferhatbegovi; 8-6.

FDU’s only victory of the day came from the match of Seton Hall freshman duo Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, C.A.) and Michelle Weerasinghe (Edina, M.N.). FDU’s freshman and junior pair, Julia Prantl and Ksenia Chernyshova won 8-2.

In the third round of doubles, senior Danielle Viola (Niagara, N.Y.) and sophomore Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) came up with a win against FDU’s Jessica DeCarlos and Christina Martine. The Pirates defeated FDU 8-5.

In singles matches, Seton Hall’s Verow defeated Julia Prantl, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3). The Pirate’s Viola also won her match against Jessica DeCarlos; 6-3, 3-7, (1-7) with a 10-2 decision. FDU’s Dzana Ferhatbegovi was up against Seton Hall’s freshman Weerasinghe. Weerasinghe won her match; 6-3, 6-7, (7-9), with a 10-4 decision. Also winning their singles matches against FDU were freshman Kilarski, sophomore Sunbul, and junior Liebschner. Liebschner won her matches 6-4, 6-4.

After another successful day in dual matches for Seton Hall, the team will move on to next weekend’s ITA Regionals. The ITA Regionals will be held in Philadelphia, P.A. at the University of Pennsylvania. The Championship matches will begin on Friday, October 24^th until Tuesday, October 28^th.
