WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Seton Hall women's tennis team opened up its spring season at the Army Round Robin Tournament last weekend. The Pirates swept Fordham, but fell to both Army squads, who split their team for this event.
The teams competed in doubles action on Saturday, while the singles portion took place on Sunday. All matches were a single pro-set scored to eight.
Denise Liebschner (Weinboehla, Germany) topped Army "Black's" Caitlin Finnegan, 8-3, while Amanda El-Tobgy (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned a win against Christine Limsiaco by the same score in the Pirates' only wins in that match.
Seton Hall split the singles portion of its contest with Army "Gold," but only won 1-of-3 doubles matches to drop the tilt. Liebschner, Nadja Shein (Tallinn, Estonia), and Danielle Viola (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) each won solo. In doubles, the pair of Slavina Kaplonska (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Shein beat Jessica Shurtz and Charlee Worford, 8-3.
Against Fordham, Liebschner, Shein, Viola, El-Tobgy, Nathalie Ranger (Oakville, Ontario), and Liza Chu (Panama City, Panama) all won convincingly in singles play.
The duo of Chu and Liebschner topped the Rams' Catherine Kellner and Martina Featherston, 9-7, while Alexandra Harvey (Chatham, N.J.) and Viola were victorious over Elizabeth Stall and Kathryn Pando, 8-4, to complete the sweep.
The Pirates will play their first home match against Fordham on Saturday, February 2, at the Westfield Racket Club in Westfield. The contest begins at 6:00 p.m. and admission is free.
