WEST POINT, N.Y. The tennis team concluded play at the Eastern Intercollegiate Championships on Sunday after three days of competition. The team saw four Pirates compete in consolation-bracket finals matches, including one player who came away with a victory.
In the second singles consolation finals, junior Nadja Sein (Tallinn, Estonia) defeated her teammate, sophomore Danielle Viola (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) in three sets for the championship. Sein struck first and took the first set from Viola, 6-4. Viola then regrouped to win the second set, 4-6, but Sein ultimately won the battle of the Pirates with a 10-5 win in the third set.
In the third singles consolation finals, junior Veronika Gerka (Edmonton, Alberta) battled Erica Federgreen of Stonybrook for the championship. Federgreen defeated Gerka in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 10-4.
Senior Ebru Burduroglu (Istanbul, Turkey) faced Stonybrook’s Paola Rodolfi in the first singles consolation finals but lost to Rodolfi, 6-2, 6-3.
The Pirates will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 22, for a three-day event at the Quinnipiac Fall Tournament.
