Tennis Opens Fall Season at Eastern Intercollegiate Championships

WEST POINT, N.Y. The Seton Hall tennis team opened the 2006 season at the Eastern Intercollegiate Championships on Friday. Senior Iva Gyurgina (Radomir, Bulgaria) secured the first singles win of the season for Seton Hall, defeating Hofstra’s Stacey Kent, 6-2, 6-4, in the second singles Round of 16 after a first-round bye. She is the only Pirate remaining in competition.

Senior Sylvia Jaros (Scarborough, Ontario) topped UMass’s Kristin DiPiero, 7-6 (1), 6-3, in the second singles first round. She was eliminated from the competition in the Round of 16, however, after losing to Gabrielle Blaskovicova of West Virginia, 6-1, 6-1.

The Pirates return to action on Saturday for Day 2 of the Eastern Intercollegiate Championship.
