
Loiselle, Villanueva Pace Pirates Past Peacocks, 3-1

COLLEGE PARK, MD. – Senior Maddy Loiselle (Tampa, Fla.) erupted for a match-high 17 kills and junior Alondra Villanueva (Lima, Peru) had a double-double as the Seton Hall volleyball team defeated Saint Peter's, 3-1 (25-14, 22-25, 25-22, 25-15), to close the Maryland Invitational on Saturday.

For a second-straight match the Pirates took a 2-to-1 match lead, but this time, they were able to close out a convincing four-set victory. The Hall's defense was able to hold Saint Peter's to a .073 attack percentage for the match.

Loiselle dominated with 17 kills, only one attack error, a .500 attack percentage and four blocks. Villanueva collected her second career double-double with 10 kills, a career-high 16 digs and three aces.

Freshman Samantha Shelton (Oak Park, Ill.) finished one kill shy of a double-double with nine kills, a career-high 11 digs and three blocks. Senior Gwen Adler (Barrington, Ill.) had a team-high 21 assists with five digs.

SET 1:
Seton Hall never trailed in the opening set, attacking at a .429 clip and holding Saint Peter's to just .034. Leading 12-9, the Pirates scored seven of the next nine points, and the third of three-consecutive aces by Villanueva gave them a commanding 19-11 advantage. After two straight Peacocks points, The Hall scored six of the last seven points, and a block by Mia Clyburn (Fort Mill, S.C.) gave it a convincing 25-14 set-one victory.

SET 2:
Saint Peter's came out a new team in set two, scoring seven of the first nine points. Down 9-3, The Hall went on a 6-1 run to cut its deficit to just one, 10-9. Trailing 22-18, Seton Hall scored four of the next five points, and a kill by Safian, cut its deficit to 22-20. The Peacocks, however, held on for a 25-22 set-two victory. The Pirates had only a .179 attack percentage in the second frame despite six kills by Loiselle.

The third set wasn't pretty, with neither team collecting an attack percentage above .100. Trailing 7-5 early in set three, the Pirates scored five straight points capped by a surprise kill from Rylee Wooldridge (Mars, Pa.) to give them a 10-7 lead. With the score tied at 22, a kill by Villanueva, a Peacocks' attack error and a block by Loiselle and Kennedy Horn (Columbus, Ind.) gave Seton Hall a 25-22 victory.

With the score tied at six early, Seton Hall scored four of the next five points to grab a 10-7 lead and send Saint Peter's to a timeout. The Peacocks cut their deficit to 12-9, but The Hall took off on a 10-3 run to grab a commanding 22-12 advantage. The Pirates went on to win the fourth set, and clinch the match, 25-15. The Hall had a .333 attack percentage in the deciding set.

The Pirates will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 17 when they open play at the NJIT Invitational in nearby Newark, N.J. The Hall will face host NJIT at 6:00 p.m.
