
Pirates Fall in Tight Battle with NJIT, 3-1

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Freshman Sadie Reich (Wantagh, N.Y.) erupted for a career-high 17 kills, with only two attack errors, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell in four sets to NJIT, 3-1 (22-25, 26-24, 24-26, 23-25), on Saturday.
The Pirates struggled finding the floor on their attacks all afternoon as the Highlanders' defense racked up 74 total digs. The Hall also had 17 service errors, a season-high. It's only the second time in program history in 11 meetings that Seton Hall has lost to NJIT in volleyball.
Reich was brilliant, collecting 17 kills, the highest total for any Pirate so far this season, only two attack errors, a .405 attack percentage, nine digs and two blocks. Her classmate, Daria Safian (Moscow, Russia) also had a huge match, totaling 13 kills, only four attack errors, six digs and two aces.
Sophomore Gwen Adler (Barrington, Ill.) picked up her second-straight double-double with a career-high 32 assists to go with 14 digs and two kills. Senior Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkiye) had a career-high 10 kills, only two attack errors, a .444 attack percentage, three blocks and two aces.
SET 1:
Leading 9-7 in the opening set, NJIT went on a 6-1 run to grab a 13-10 advantage. The Hall trailed until a bad set by NJIT put it back ahead, 19-18. With the score tied at 20, the Highlanders collected back-to-back kills, putting them up by two and forcing a Pirates' timeout. The Hall couldn't recover out of the break as NJIT went on to a 25-22 first-set victory.
SET 2:
The second set featured 11 ties and was arguably the closest of the match. Down 19-18, The Hall scored three straight points, and a kill by Subasili gave it a 21-19 lead. A kill by Reich broke a 23-23 tie and put The Hall in set point, but NJIT was able to stave off the loss to tie the set at 24. Safian responded with another kill to put the Pirates back in set point, and a kill by Roberts-Navarro ended the set in Seton Hall's favor, 26-24.
SET 3:
Seton Hall had only a .044 attack percentage, but still had an opportunity to win the pivotal third set. The Hall led for the vast majority of the third stanza, and a kill by Roberts-Navarro gave them an 8-3 lead and set NJIT to an early time out. The Hall had three straight points, and a kill by Reich extended its lead to 20-14. NJIT, however, rallied and tied the score at 23 with a 9-3 run. A kill by Safian put The Hall in set point, but the Highlanders stunned The Hall with three straight points to end the set.
SET 4:
The fourth set had 10 ties and six lead changes. Both teams had excellent offensive percentages with Seton Hall attacking at a .341 clip and NJIT tallying .429. With the score tied at 22, NJIT had back-to-back points to enter match point. A kill by Reich closed The Hall's gap to 24-23, but the Highlanders completed the upset with a 25-23 fourth-set victory.

The Pirates will return to action tomorrow when they wrap up play at the Seton Hall Classic. The Hall will host Central Connecticut State at 1:00 p.m. ET.
