Pirates Suffer First Loss of Season Against George Mason
2/7/2025 5:29:00 PM | Softball
How it Happened
All eyes were on the circle at the start of the game when Pirates freshman Rachael Schumann began her first career collegiate start in the Pirates' second game of the season. She faced trouble in the opening inning, allowing a pair of runs, but escaped the inning without further damage. After a clean second inning, George Mason added another two runs to put the Pirates down 4-0 through three innings.
As the top of the fourth arrived, Kyra Kreuscher came into the game to take over for the freshman. By the end of the fourth inning, the Patriots held a 7-0 advantage over the Pirates as they continued to search for an answer at the plate.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Pirates were on the precipice of scoring. A pair of singles from Katey Brennan and Taylor Hill gave The Hall two runners on with no outs. After two fly ball outs, Hannah Alexander got the Pirates on the board with an two-run single. Those were Alexander's first RBI in over 18 months since missing last season with a shoulder injury. Another single, this time from Andrea Perez, allowed the Pirates the opportunity to draw even closer. A pop out, however, wrapped up the inning and ended the Pirates' run.
With a do-or-die seventh inning approaching, the Pirates turned to sophomore Karissa Dupuis to pitch in hopes of a Pirates comeback. Dupuis logged a scoreless inning, allowing the Pirates an opportunity to claw back the deficit in the final frame. A one-out single from Amber Johnson and a two-out walk from Hill presented the Pirates an eventful opportunity to draw the game even closer. A line out ended the game, however, and the Pirates fell to the Patriots 7-2.

- Alexander had her first RBI since the May 13, 2023 matchup against Villanova.
