
Safian, Pirates Drop Match to UConn, 3-0

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Freshman Daria Safian (Moscow, Russia) had a team-best nine kills, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to Connecticut, 3-0 (14-25, 22-25, 13-25), in Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Hall fell behind early and both sets one and three and couldn't battle back. The second set was close, featuring six ties, but UConn pulled it out late.

Safian finished with nine kills and two digs. Sophomore Gwen Adler (Barrington, Ill.) had team-highs of 14 assists and eight digs.

SET 1:
Seton Hall pulled to within one point, 8-7, early in set one, but Connecticut answered with a 7-1 run to grab a commanding 15-8 advantage. The Pirates just couldn't find their offense in set one, collecting just six kills and firing at a -.071 attack percentage. Meanwhile, UConn had a .476 attack percentage with 12 kills and two attack errors in only 21 attempts.

SET 2:
The Hall got off to a much better start in set two, and a kill by Hanna Labanowska (Olszewnica Stara, Poland) gave it a 9-4 lead and forced a UConn time out. Down 11-5, the Huskies went on an 8-2 run to tie the set at 13. Seton Hall jumped back ahead, 17-15, but Connecticut answered with four straight points and never trailed again. A kill by Safian staved off one UConn set point, but ultimately the Pirates fell, 25-22.

Connecticut led the third set wire-to-wire, scoring 13 of the first 15 points to build a large early lead. Back-to-back points cut the Pirates' deficit to nine, but UConn answered with three straight to grab a commanding 17-5 advantage. The Huskies went on to finish the match with a 25-13 set-three win.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday, Nov. 7 when they travel to Chicago to take on DePaul. Match time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET.
