SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) collected her team-leading 10th double-double of the season, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to Butler, 3-0 (21-25, 23-25, 24-26), on Saturday.
Â
The Pirates were the first team to 20 points in both the second and third sets, but couldn't hold the late leads. The loss drops them two matches behind Butler in the BIG EAST standings for the sixth and final BIG EAST Tournament berth. The Bulldogs also now own the tie-breaker.
Â
Jakubowski had 13 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) led the Pirates' offense with nine kills to go with eight digs. Senior Jennifer Giron (Benicia, Calif.) collected a career-high 19 digs.
Â
SET 1:
The opening set was a defensive affair with long rallies. The teams combined for 58 digs in the opening stanza alone. A kill by Bianca Bucciarelli (Carate Brianza, Italy) gave The Hall an early 8-5 lead, but Butler responded with an 8-2 run to grab a 13-10 advantage. The Hall was never able to find the equalizer. A block by Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) and Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkey) cut the Pirates' deficit to 22-21 and forced a Butler timeout, but out of the break, the Bulldogs closed out the set with four of the final five points.
Â
SET 2:
Both teams had their best offensive showing in the second set with the Pirates recording a .194 attack percentage and Butler recording .306. Trailing 8-7, The Hall scored five of the next six points, three of which came on service aces by Subasili, to take a 13-9 advantage. Butler rallied late. Down 21-18, the Bulldogs scored four straight points to take a 22-21 lead. The Hall scored the next two points, and an ace by Mason Woo (Burbank, Calif.) put it in front, 23-22, but the Bulldogs rallied again and scored the final three points of the set to win 25-23.
Â
SET 3:
In set three, the Pirates again led for most of the set. A block by Subasili and Walsh gave The Hall a 21-17 lead, but Butler answered with a 6-1 run to take a 23-22 advantage. A kill by Jakubowski staved off a Butler match point to tie the set at 24, but the Bulldogs were able score the final two points on a pair of Pirate attack errors.
