LAST WEEK
Seton Hall snapped a seven-match losing streak last week and went 1-1 with a pair of BIG EAST home matches. Junior Bianca Bucciarelli (Carate Brianza, Italy) and Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) collected double-doubles as the Pirates defeated St. John's, 3-1 (25-22, 26-24, 22-25, 26-24), on Wednesday. The Hall's defensive front line churned out a season-high 15.0 blocks in only four sets, led by freshman Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkey), who had a team-high six blocks. St. John's had a strong defensive match too, collecting 13.0 team blocks.
Â
Bucciarelli filled the box score asserting herself both offensively and defensively on Wednesday. She had a team-high 15 kills to go with 10 digs, five blocks and four service aces. Jakubowski finished with a team-high 24 assists to go with 13 digs.
Â
Jakubowski collected her team-leading 10th double-double of the season, but The Hall fell to Butler, 3-0 (21-25, 23-25, 24-26), on Saturday. The Pirates were the first team to 20 points in both the second and third sets, but couldn't hold the late leads. Jakubowski had 13 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) led the Pirates' offense with nine kills to go with eight digs. Senior Jennifer Giron (Benicia, Calif.) collected a career-high 19 digs.
Â
PLAYOFF WATCH
Seton Hall is currently two matches behind Butler for the sixth and final BIG EAST Tournament berth, but also doesn't have the tie-breaker against the Bulldogs, so essentially, the Pirates are three matches back with four left to play. DePaul has also crept up and is now tied with The Hall at 5-9 chasing the 7-7 Bulldogs.
Â
Considering The Hall was picked to finish 11th, it's impressive that the Pirates, under a new head coach, are still alive and fighting for a playoff spot with only two weekends of volleyball remaining.
Â
SCOUTING XAVIER
Seton Hall and Xavier will meet for the 18th time in history on Friday. The Musketeers have dominated the all-time series with wins in 13 of 17 prior meetings. Xavier has won seven of the last eight matches against the Pirates, including a three-setter earlier this season.
Â
Giron tied for the match-high with 13 digs, but The Hall fell to Xavier, 3-0 (18-25, 15-25, 18-25), in Walsh Gymnasium on Oct. 29. Giron tied for the match-high with 13 digs to go with six assists. Walsh tied for the match-high with 10 kills. She also had five kills and two blocks.
Â
Xavier enters the weekend with a 16-8 overall record and an impressive 9-5 mark in BIG EAST play. They're currently in sole possession of third place in the conference standings and have clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament at the end of this month. A four-set loss to Connecticut on Friday snapped a four-match win streak for the Musketeers, but they bounced back with a sweep of Providence on Sunday.
Â
SCOUTING CREIGHTON
Seton Hall and Creighton will meet for the 20th time in history on Sunday. The two-time defending BIG EAST Champions have won 16 of the prior 19 meetings with the Pirates including the last 15 in a row. Furthermore, the Bluejays are a perfect 39-0 in sets over the last 13 matches against The Hall. Seton Hall's last victory over Creighton came in 2014, a three-set sweep in Omaha.
Â
The Pirates committed only one more attack error than the No. 15 Bluejays, but the Creighton defense proved too much as the Pirates fell, 3-0 (16-25, 16-25, 11-25), on October 28 in Walsh Gymnasium. No. 15 Creighton collected 57 digs, a season-high for a Seton Hall opponent in a three-set match, and held the Pirates to a .081 attack percentage. Although the Bluejays committed only one less attack error, 14-to-13, they were far more efficient, registering a .321 attack percentage for the match.
Â
Walsh and junior Laila Wallace (Munster, Ind.) and led The Hall with five kills apiece. Giron had a team-high 11 digs to go with four assists.
Â
Creighton enters this weekend ranked No. 15 in the nation with a 22-3 overall record and a perfect 14-0 mark in conference play. The Bluejays have won 14 straight matches, including a five-set victory over No. 16 Marquette on Oct. 14, handing the Golden Eagles their first BIG EAST loss. Creighton is coming off a pair of home sweeps against Providence and Connecticut last weekend. The Bluejays haven't lost a set over their last six matches.
Â
UP NEXT
Next weekend, Seton Hall will return home to Walsh Gymnasium for a pair of matches that will close out the 2022 regular season. The Hall will host Georgetown on Friday and Villanova on Saturday. Both matches will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will streamed live for FloSports subscribers. Friday's broadcast will be a Pirate Sports Network production, while Saturday's will be a BIG EAST Digital Network production.
