
Pirates Take Down Previously Unbeaten Georgia, 86-80

ST. THOMAS, USVI – The Seton Hall women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit late in the third quarter to upset previously unbeaten Georgia, 86-80, in the Paradise Jam finale on Saturday in St. Thomas.

Although Seton Hall, Georgia and VCU all finished with 2-1 records in the Paradise Jam, the tournament title went to Georgia by virtue of a net points tie-breaker. The Pirates lost to VCU by one and beat Georgia by six, so they finished with a +5. Georgia lost to Seton Hall by six, but defeated VCU by 14 for a +8.

Down 70-68, the Pirates went on a 9-0 run that gave them a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

For a second straight night, senior Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) was brilliant for The Hall. Named to the Paradise Jam All-Tournament Team, she finished with game-highs of 23 points and nine assists. Sidney Cooks (Kenosha, Wis.) had 18 points, while both Sha'Lynn Hagans (Manassas, Va.) and Mya Bembry (West Orange, N.J.) both also reached double-figures in scoring with 12 and 10 points respectively.

THE STORY:
The opening quarter was a back-and-forth affair with neither team grabbing a lead of greater than four points. Both teams shot 50.0% or better from the field and the score was tied at 23 after the first 10 minutes. In the second, Sha'Lynn Hagans (Manassas, Va.) hit a three-pointer to give The Hall a 28-26 lead, but Georgia responded with a 7-0 run to grab a 33-28 advantage with 5:46 before halftime.Â

Trailing 40-34, the Pirates closed the first half with a 9-0 run over the final 2:45. Jala Jordan (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored the last five points of the half, including a three-pointer that gave The Hall the lead.Â

Park-Lane pulled up for a jumper to give The Hall a 49-48 lead, but Georgia responded with an 11-0 run to take a commanding 59-49 advantage with 3:54 left in the third. The Hall battled back and methodically cut into the Bulldogs' lead. After trailing by four to begin the fourth, a layup by Bembry on a pretty pass by Cooks gave The Hall a 68-67 lead with 7:11 left in the game. After a three-pointer by Georgia, which temporarily swung the lead back in their favor, the Pirates went on a 9-0 run to take a 77-70 advantage.

The Bulldogs came right back and made it a one-possession game until Hagans connected on a back-breaking corner three-pointer to put The Hall up 84-78 with only 35 seconds left.

- Georgia out-rebounded The Hall, 35-to-21, including a 13-to-4 edge on the offensive glass and a 15-to-6 advantage in second-chance points.

- Seton Hall was 10-for-14 (71.4%) from the free-throw line, while Georgia was 12-for-17 (70.6%).
