SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior Desiree Elmore (Hartford, Conn.) registered game-highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds as the Seton Hall women's basketball team routed Fairfield, 74-44, in historic Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday.
Â
Elmore notched 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the field and made all four of her free-throws. She also had a career-high 14 rebounds, three assists and two steals in a strong all-around effort.
Â
In all, five Pirates scored in double-figures, Elmore, Barbara Johnson (Toronto, Ontario) (14 points), Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) (12 points), Alexis Lewis (Pittston, Pa.) (11 points) and Mya Jackson (Wilmington, Ohio) (10 points).
Â
The Story:
Seton Hall gave Fairfield little opportunity to get going as it pounced on the Stags, out-scoring them 24-to-9 and making 8-of-12 shots in the first quarter. Leading 13-9, with 4:05 left in the opening frame, The Hall closed the quarter with a furious 11-0 burst. Six of the Pirates' points during the run came from Samuels, the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the year.
Â
The second quarter was a different story. Another Samuels fast-break bucket grew the Pirates lead to 30-11 with 7:02 left in the first half, but then The Hall went cold. They didn't net another field goal until Barbara Johnson drilled a three-pointer with 7:50 left in the third quarter. Still, The Hall's lead never got lower than nine points during the drought.
Â
Fairfield cut The Hall's lead to eight points, 36-28 with 7:06 to go in the third quarter, but the Pirates responded with a 16-4 run, capped by a three-pointer from Jasmine Smith (Houston, Texas) to take a commanding 52-32 advantage.
Â
Inside the Numbers:
Seton Hall will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 12 when it hosts VCU in historic Walsh Gymnasium. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Pirate Sports Network will provide the video stream for SHUpirates.com.
