BRONX, N.Y. – Junior Desiree Elmore (Hartford, Conn.) led four Pirates in double-figures in scoring and the Seton Hall women's basketball defeated Saint Joseph's, 55-39, at Fordham University on Sunday.
Â
Elmore scored 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting, grabbed seven rebounds and recorded three steals to lead The Hall. Senior Alexis Lewis (Pittston, Pa.) finished with 12 points, while freshmen Mya Jackson (Wilmington, Ohio) and Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) tallied 10 points.
Â
The Pirates' defense was the other big story in the game, holding the Hawks to just 32.7% shooting for the game and 39 total points. For the second time this year, the Pirates held an opponent without a three-point field goal as Saint Joseph's was 0-for-12.
Â
The Story:
After a slow first quarter, the Pirates' offense kicked into high gear late in the second. Leading 28-20, The Hall went on a 9-2 run over the final 3:04 of the first half. A three-pointer at the halftime buzzer by Lewis gave the Pirates a 37-22 advantage at the break.
Â
In the third quarter, a layup by Elmore gave the Pirates a 45-27 cushion with 5:29 left, but then the Pirate offense went cold. Seton Hall went without a point for the rest of the quarter, finally breaking its fast 14 seconds into the fourth quarter. Despite the drought, Saint Joseph's could only cut its deficit to 12 points. They never got closer. A three-point play by Jackson put Seton Hall back up by 18 again, 55-37, with under three minutes left, and the Pirates cruised the rest of the way.
Â
Inside the Numbers:
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, Nov. 22 when it travels to Bethlehem, Pa. for a non-conference game against Lehigh. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
