The Hall's Comeback Rally Falls One-Point Short
1/6/2019 4:17:00 PM | Men's Basketball
CHICAGO - The Seton Hall men's basketball team clawed back from a 15-point deficit at DePaul to have a shot at a game-winner, but the last-second magic didn't fall this time as the Pirates lost a heartbreaker to the Blue Demons, 75-74, Sunday at Wintrust Arena.
Sophomore Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) took the last shot in the waning seconds after receiving the in-bound pass from junior Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.), but the attempt was off the mark as The Hall saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end.
Powell led Seton Hall (11-4, 2-1 BIG EAST) with 16 points, and Max Strus led DePaul (9-5, 1-2 BIG EAST) with 21 points.
Turning Point
Seton Hall trailed by as many as 15 points in the contest, but the Pirates found a way to get back in the game. Sophomore Taurean Thompson (New York, N.Y.) was a big reason for that, as he nailed a trifecta of three-pointers in the second half, including one at 9:32, followed by a layup in transition at 9:14 to bring The Hall within three, 60-57.
DePaul immediately went back up nine, but the Pirates kept fighting with big plays. Freshman Jared Rhoden (Baldwin, N.Y.) took a pass under the basket from junior Quincy McKnight (Bridgeport, Conn.) and converted a dunk to make it a four-point game, 75-71. Then the Pirates got a defensive stop. After a Mamukelashvili miss, Powell got the offensive board and drilled a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one, 75-74.
The Hall forced another DePaul turnover, and this time Powell's three attempt fell short. DePaul got the ball back, but the Pirates defense came up big again by getting a deflection and causing a jump ball with the possession arrow favoring The Hall with 10 seconds left.
DePaul, under the foul limit, fouled Powell with 6.1 seconds left to set up the final play. Powell in-bounded to Mamukelashvili, and the sophomore sent the game-winning three up, but it missed, and the Pirates could not get off a second chance opportunity on the rebound.Â
