SOUTH KENT, CONN. – Senior Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.) shot a 3-under-par, 69, in an interrupted second round to lead the Seton Hall men's golf team to a third place finish at a rain-shortened 2018 Hartford Hawks Invitational on Tuesday.
The field was scheduled to play two continuous rounds on Monday, and a final round on Tuesday, but due to rain and darkness, the end of yesterday's second round was suspended. Teams finished their second rounds this morning, with most teams needing to play between three and five holes. Round three was canceled due to heavy rain.
Yeom was brilliant in Hartford, tying for second place among 112 individual golfers, and finishing just one stroke behind the individual champion, Central Florida's Bobby Bai. For the tournament, he shot an 8-under-par, 67-69-136, which breaks former teammate Lloyd Jefferson Go's two-round, par-72 record by two strokes. Go set the record at this tournament in 2016.
Yeom's performance is his seventh career sub-par tournament, which ties for third-most in Seton Hall history, and his fifth top-5 finish.
Collectively, the Pirates fired their second straight 6-under-par, 282, in the second round, and moved up one spot to third place in the final standings. The Hall finished with a 12-under-par, 282-282-564. Connecticut finished second at 17-under-par, and Central Florida won the title at 26-under-par.
Like Yeom's score broke the Seton Hall individual record, The Hall's 564 set the two-round team record for a par-72 tournament. Furthermore, Seton Hall's -12 is the second-most strokes under par for a tournament of any par in Pirate history.
Gen Nagai (Mandaue Cebu City, Philippines) also had a monster performance that shouldn't be overlooked. The senior shot a 2-under-par, 70, in round two, to finish the tournament at 5-under-par with a 69-70-139. Nagai tied for fifth place overall, his fourth career top-5 finish. His 139 is tied for third-lowest ever at Seton Hall, behind only Yeom and Go.
Junior Alex Chalk (Castle Douglas, Scotland) finished a strong tournament, shooting one stroke better in round two with an even-par, 72. He tied for 28th overall with a 1-over-par, 73-72-145. Freshman Deven Ramachandran (San Rafael, Calif.) finished only one stroke behind Chalk with a pair of 1-over-par, 73's to end the tournament at 2-over-par.
Sophomore Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas) shaved eight strokes off his first round score to shoot a 1-under-par, 71, in round two. For the tournament, he finished at 6-over-par with a 79-71-150.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) finished the tournament with a 9-over-par, 75-78-153.
