DADE CITY, FLA. - The Seton Hall men's golf team opened the 2017 spring season with a convincing 5-to-1 victory over Toledo in the quarterfinal round of the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play event at Lake Jovita Country Club on Monday.Â
Â
The Hall will now face No. 8 seed Miami (Ohio) in their second match on Monday in the semifinals. The RedHawks upset top-seeded Eastern Michigan, 4-to-2.
Â
The Pirates were led by senior Lloyd Jefferson Go (Guadalupe Cebu City, Philippines), who soundly defeated Toledo's Stephen Watts, 5 & 4. Go lost only the third hole to Watts, but defeated him in holes four, six, seven, eight, 11 and 13 to claim victory after only 14 holes played. Go is now 3-0 all-time at this event.
Â
Kevin O'Brien (Wexford, Pa.) was the second-most impressive Pirate finisher on the morning. The senior defeated Toledo's Grant Godfrey, 4 & 2. Down a hole through his first eight, O'Brien won the next three holes to take a two-hole lead. Victories on holes No. 2 and No. 3 sealed his win with two holes remaining.
Â
Freshman Alex Chalk (Castle Douglas, Scotland) downed his opponent, Spencer Shoemaker, 3 & 2. Even through 11 holes, Chalk also made his move late in the round. The Pirate newcomer won three of the final five holes to clinch the victory with two holes to play.
Â
Sophomores Gen Nagai (Mandaue Cebu City, Philippines) and Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.) both edged their opponents by one hole. Nagai won hole No. 15 to take a two-hole lead, but Toledo's Thomas Thurloway won No. 16 to cut the lead back to one. Nagai however, was able to hold on for the victory.Â
Â
Yeom trailed by as many as three holes after eight, but was able to make a huge rally. Yeom won holes 11, 13 and 14 to pull even, before falling behind again after Toledo's Colin Joseph won No. 15. A victory on the 17th hole again tied the score, and a win on his final hole of the afternoon handed the victory to Yeom.
Â
Junior Linus Yip (Sydney, Australia) was the lone Pirate to fall on Monday. He was edged by Toledo's Joe Bryce by one hole. Both golfers led throughout the round, with neither taking a lead of more than a single hole. Bryce was able to win the final hole of the round to record the match victory.
