South Orange, N.J. - Senior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, and the No. 23 Seton Hall men's basketball team recorded 20 assists on 34 field goals made as the Pirates defeated La Salle, 87-74, Thursday night in a charity exhibition game at Walsh Gymnasium. The game has helped raised over $10,000 that will go to United for Puerto Rico to aid in the hurricane relief efforts.
Three other Pirates scored in double figures, including senior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who had 11 points to go with five assists, junior Michael Nzei (Makurdi, Nigeria), who had 10 points, and sophomore Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) who had 10 points, three assists and three steals. Senior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) added six points, nine rebounds and five assists in a well-rounded effort.
Turning Point
The Pirates used defense to generate offense early, going on a 10-0 run facilitated by three Explorers turnovers. Freshman Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) punctuated a 21-7 Pirates rally with a three-pointer that sent the Walsh Gym crowed into a frenzy.
Meanwhile Rodriguez couldn't miss in the first half, making six of his seven field goal attempts and three of his four from downtown. His three-pointer at 3:29 gave the Pirates an 18-point lead, and senior Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) put The Hall up 20, 44-24, with a great layup underneath.
Against Seton Hall's reserves, who got an extended run of action in the second half, La Salle closed to within six points, 64-58, but coming out of a timeout, Carrington hit a mid-range jumper, the Pirates forced a turnover on defense, Carrington made two free throws and got another steal to feed Rodriguez for a three-point play to reclaim a 13-point lead, 71-58, as the Pirates went on to the 13-point victory.
