PREVIEW
Seton Hall will host BIG EAST Conference opponent Villanova at Walsh Gym on Saturday, Oct. 14. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The match will be broadcasted by the Pirate Sports Network.
Â
WEDNESDAY
Senior Sharay Barnes (Swarthmore, Pa.) and junior Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) combined for 33 kills and just four attack errors as the Pirates defeated Villanova in four sets, 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 25-23), on Wednesday. Barnes was fabulous registering a season-high with 17 kills, just two attack errors and a team-best .577 attack percentage. Thelen added 16 kills, only two attack errors and a .359 attack percentage. She also had three blocks.
Â
The victory was significant for the Pirates since it improves them to 5-3 in BIG EAST Conference play, and it provides a win over a quality opponent also vying for one of the four BIG EAST Tournament spots.
Â
LAST WEEKEND
The Pirates took to the road last weekend and split a pair of sweeps in the mid-west. On Friday, Seton Hall swept Xavier in Cincinnati. Junior Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.) recorded a match-high 14 kills, while sophomore Maggie Cvelbar (Euclid, Ohio) had a double-double with 21 assists and 11 digs. Thelen added 11 kills, five digs and four blocks. On Saturday, the Pirates fell in three sets to Butler in Indianapolis. Again, it was Koska who led them offensively with 13 kills and an impressive .435 attack percentage. Cvelbar again had a double-double with 15 assists and 11 digs.
Â
SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
Seton Hall and St. John's will meet for the 28th time in history on Saturday. The Pirates have won 15 of the prior 27 meetings, including six of the last seven matches.Â
Â
Last season, the teams split the season series with each team winning at home. On Oct. 1, the Pirates fell in four sets in Queens. Thelen led The Hall with 15 kills. Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) had 11 kills and four blocks. Junior Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) had 33 assists and eight digs. The Pirates bounced back in their second meeting with the Red Storm on Senior Night, Nov. 19, with a three-set sweep. Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) led the Pirates with 13 kills to go with eight digs.
Â
St. John's enters Saturday's match with a record of 11-12 overall and 3-5 in BIG EAST Conference play. The Red Storm are coming off a sweep of Georgetown on Wednesday in Queens. Last weekend, they split a pair of games in the mid-west, falling at Butler in four sets, but defeating Xavier in five sets. St. John's third BIG EAST victory this season came on Sept. 29 at home against Providence.
