Pirates Drop BIG EAST Opener To St. John's
9/24/2016 5:12:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's soccer team (4-4-1, 0-1 BIG EAST) dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to St. John's (6-1-3, 1-0) on Saturday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. The contest marked the start of BIG EAST conference play for both the Pirates and the Red Storm.
Neither side was able to generate much offense in the opening frame, with Anna MacLean (Thunder Bay, Ontario) making two of her match-high eight saves in the first 45. After 23 more minutes of scoreless action to start the second period, St. John's finally broke the ice with a penalty kick goal in the 69th minute.
Turning Point
Down a goal with time running out in regulation, the Pirates pressed forward and were able to generate a corner kick in the 87th minute. Frankie Maier (Oradell, N.J.) swung in a cross and a deflection led to a shot for Lauren Hall (Bridgewater, N.J.), blocked in front by the SJU defense. After the ensuing scramble the ball found its way to the feet of Sarah Schweinberg (Wantage, N.J.) who unloaded a missile on target from 25 yards out, but her blast was tipped over the bar by a diving Diana Poulin for the Red Storm.
Inside The Numbers
- St. John's held an 18-4 edge in total shots and a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal
- The Red Storm generated five corner kicks compared to two for The Hall
- Four different Pirates fired one shot, with Cathy Chukuka (Marlboro, N.J.) and Schweinberg putting attempts on goal
- MacLean made eight saves (six in the second half) while Poulin stopped one in each frame
- Over her last three matches, MacLean has stopped 28-of-30 shots for a .933 save percentage
- Three of the last four meetings between The Hall and SJU have now been decided by one goal
- The late chance for Schweinberg was her second career shot on goal; the freshman has played 835 of a possible 843 minutes on the year after going the full 90 for the eighth time this season
- Tanika Roach (Somerset, N.J.) made her first appearance since Aug. 29 and played 41 minutes
- The setback snapped a three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1) for the Pirates
- Eight of Seton Hall's nine contest this season have been decided by one goal or less
- The contest served as The Hall's Mary Jennings Memorial Game, raising funds for a scholarship in the name of the former Pirate who lost her battle with cancer in 2006
The Pirates return to action on the road, continuing conference play at Marquette on Sept. 29. The Hall defeated the Golden Eagles 1-0 in South Orange last season.
