Pirates Drop Seton Hall Classic Opener to GW
9/2/2016 10:13:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Danielle Schroeder and sophomore Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.) had strong performances, but the Seton Hall volleyball team lost to George Washington, 3-1 (23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 23-25), in its opening match of the 2016 Seton Hall Classic on Friday.
Â
Seton Hall (0-4) dropped the first two sets, but both were hotly contested. The teams combined for four lead changes and nine ties in set one alone. Trailing 17-16, the Pirates scored three straight and a kill by Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) gave them a 19-17 advantage and prompted a George Washington timeout. The Colonials regrouped however, and scored five of the next six points to reclaim the lead, and never trailed again in a 25-23 victory.
Â
Set two was even closer with the teams playing through 11 ties. A kill by freshman Madison Salkowski (Cold Spring, Ky.) gave The Hall a 20-19 lead, but the Colonials scored six of the final eight points.
Â
The Pirates played their best set of the season in set three, winning 25-20. Seton Hall registered a season-high .387 attack percentage in the third frame and recorded its first set win of the 2016 campaign. The Hall grabbed the lead early and blocks by Salkowski and Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) extended its lead to as many as eight points, 19-11.
Â
Turning Point:
Seton Hall seemed poised to tie the match and send it to a decisive fifth set, but the Colonials rallied late in set four. A kill by Schroeder gave the Pirates a 20-17 advantage, but George Washington scored four straight points to take the lead and never looked back in route to a 25-23 win.
