Pirates Fall to W. Michigan at Golden Dome Invite
8/27/2016 1:18:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Schroeder and Thelen play well, but the Pirates fall to 0-2 with today's setback.
NOTRE DAME, IND. – Senior Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) put forth their second straight strong match, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to Western Michigan, 3-0 (23-25, 18-25, 20-25), on Saturday morning.
Â
The Pirates, a very young team, committed a high amount of attack errors for a second straight match to begin the season, and therefore fall to 0-2. After posting a respectable .265 attack percentage in set one, the Pirates' saw that number plummet to .081 in set two and .053 in set three.
Â
For the second straight day, the turning point of the match was a tight first set that got away from the Pirates. Seton Hall led for most of the opening frame, and took a commanding 19-14 lead on an ace by sophomore Grace Forren (La Jolla, Calif.). The Broncos however, stormed back and scored six of the next seven points to pull even at 20-20. A kill by sophomore Cherise Hennigan (Corona, Calif.) regained the lead for Seton Hall, 23-22, but Western Michigan scored the final three points of the set to win, 25-23.
Â
The Pirates never led in set two, as the Broncos led by as many as eight points in a 25-18 victory. Set three was much of the same with Western Michigan taking an early 3-2 lead and not looking back for a decisive 25-20 victory.
Â
Inside the Numbers:
- Schroeder led the Pirates in kills for a second straight match. She finished with nine kills, five digs and four blocks.
- Thelen was much more efficient against Western Michigan, finishing with eight kills, only four attack errors and a team-high 12 digs.
- Junior Sarah Kenneweg (Poolesville, Md.) reached double-figures in digs for a second straight match. She finished with 10.
- Freshman Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) led the Pirates with five blocks.
News & Notes:
- Seton Hall falls to 0-3 all-time against Western Michigan.Â
