Powell Shines in 91-83 Victory at Iowa
11/18/2016 1:16:00 AM | Men's Basketball
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Freshman Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) broke out with a huge game only three games into his collegiate career as he scored a career-high 26 points, including eight in the final four minutes, to help the Seton Hall men's basketball team record a 91-83 victory at Iowa Thursday night in a Gavitt Tipoff Games matchup at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Powell shot 9-for-14 from the field and connected on five of his seven three-point attempts.
The Pirates (3-0) handed Iowa (2-1) just its second loss in its last 41 home non-conference games dating back to 2011.
Junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) totaled 25 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two assists. Junior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied 20 points on 9-of-18 shooting with three assists and four rebounds.
Junior Angel Delgado (Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic) nearly completed his third-straight double-double with nine points and 11 boards.
For the Hawkeyes, Peter Jok finished with a game-high 30 points and 11 rebounds.
Turning Point
The Pirates trailed 44-42 at halftime, but a dunk from Delgado with 16:57 on the clock in the second half gave the Hall a 48-47 lead that was never relinquished. Four consecutive points from Rodriguez gave SHU a seven-point, 54-47 advantage with 14:30 to play, before Iowa drew to within one of the lead at 60-59 with 9:19 to go. Up by three with eight minutes to go, the Pirates forced three Iowa turnovers in a span of 2:08. Junior Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) took a pass from Delgado in the paint for an easy layup and a 10-point advantage, 77-67, with 4:59 to play.
The teams traded buckets down the stretch, but an eight-point outburst from Powell over a span of 1:40 in the final four minutes, including the dagger three-pointer from the corner with 2:10 to go, sealed the victory for the Pirates.
