Pirates Raise Banner, Start Fast in Big Win over CCSU
11/13/2016 5:19:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NEWARK, N.J. – The Seton Hall men's basketball team opened the game on a 26-4 outburst to set the tone in a convincing 82-58 victory over visiting Central Connecticut State at Prudential Center Sunday afternoon. The victory was preceded by the Pirates raising their 2016 BIG EAST Tournament championship banner into the arena's rafters.
Junior Angel Delgado (Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic) recorded his 25th career and second-straight double-double with 14 points and 16 boards. He went 6-for-8 (75 percent) from the field, as did junior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who tallied a game-high 18 points, was 4-for-4 from three-point range, dished out four assists and did not turn the ball over in 24 minutes of action.
The Pirates (2-0) led 44-25 at the break and never trailed. The Blue Devils (1-1) shot 1-of-13 (.077) to begin the game and were unable to climb back from the early deficit.
Junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) totaled 12 points and five rebounds, while freshman Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) registered 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting.
TURNING POINT
On the opening possession of the game, Delgado grabbed two offensive rebounds before finishing a layup to give the Hall a 2-0 lead that foreshadowed how the first half would play out.
The Pirates held a 16-1 advantage on the glass early on, and made six of their first eight shots in the opening five minutes to go ahead 13-2. CCSU hit its first shot, but then went ice cold, missing its next 13 to allow SHU to continue to build a lead.
The Hall led by as many as 22 in the first half and 24 (76-52) following a free throw by sophomore Michael Nzei (Makurdi, Nigeria) with 5:13 remaining in regulation.
