SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior Angel Delgado (Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic) scored a career-high 22 points and pulled down 14 boards, while junior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) matched a career-best 27 points en route to a 91-70 victory over visiting Fairleigh Dickinson in front of a Walsh Gymnasium capacity crowd of 1,856 in the season opener for both teams Friday night.
Delgado shot 11-of-15 (73.3 percent) and Carrington went 9-for-14 (64.3 percent) to pace the Pirates offensively. Junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) picked up his fourth career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and also added a career-high five assists.
Senior Madison Jones (Raleigh, N.C.) piled up a career-high 10 assists and turned it over just once in his debut with the Pirates.
The evening began with the Pirates unveiling their 2016 BIG EAST Championship and NCAA Tournament banners, which were debuted by the Frungillo Family, which recently donated over $750,000 to the athletics department.
Turning Point
Fairleigh Dickinson shot just 29.4 percent in the opening half, but trailed by just five, 33-28, heading into the break. However, the Pirates shot the lights out in the second half, going 22-for-28 (78.6 percent) from the field, including a 6-of-8 (75 percent) mark from three-point range.
The Knights made the first bucket of the second half to cut the lead to 33-30, but Seton Hall went on a 7-0 run to push the lead to 40-30.
The Pirates were then able to maintain a double-digit lead for the majority of the final 18 minutes. Another 7-0 run with under four minutes to go, capped by a layup from sophomore Michael Nzei (Makurdi, Nigeria), transformed a 79-66 lead into a decisive 86-66 margin to seal the victory.
