NEWARK, N.J. - Seton Hall freshman Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) recorded his BIG EAST-leading eighth double-double of the season but visiting Georgetown pulled away from the Pirates in the second half; registering an 86-67 victory at the Prudential Center on Tuesday night.
Delgado finished with 12 points and game-highs of 15 rebounds and three blocks for The Hall (15-9, 5-7 BIG EAST); hauling in double-digit rebounds for the second consecutive contest and 11th time in his rookie campaign overall.
The 6-foot-9 freshman entered the night as the conference leader with 10.1 rebounds per game in conference play and has now pulled down 10 or more boards in six of his 12 appearances against BIG EAST competition.
Junior Sterling Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) led the team in scoring for the fifth-straight outing, recording 17 points while shooting 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Gibbs now ranks first in the conference in 3-pointers made (63) and 3-point field goal percentage (.460), coming in among the top-10 nationally in the latter.
In his fourth game since returning from injury, freshman Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made his first start since December 21 at Georgia and chipped in nine points, a game-high five assists and two steals.
After SHU battled back to narrow the halftime deficit to five, Gibbs and senior Brandon Mobley (Savannah, Ga.) found the mark on triples from the left corner on the first two possessions of the final frame to pull the Pirates level at 44-44.
Georgetown freshman Isaac Copeland spearheaded the Hoyas' response, pouring in nine points during an ensuing 12-2 run that stretched the lead back to 10 at 56-46 with 14:13 to play. Mobley came up with a tip-in to narrow the gap back to single digits at the 12:31 mark but Copeland answered with a layup on the other end and the Pirates never drew closer.
The Hoyas (16-8, 8-5 BIG EAST) shot 16-of-28 (.581) from the field in the second half while Copeland and D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera combined for 21 points in the period.
GU jumped out to an early double-digit lead in the first half, turning the Pirates over five times in the first seven minutes and scoring 22 of the first 26 points in the contest.
Sophomore Jaren Sina (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) connected on a trey at the 13:20 mark to snap a four-minute scoreless streak for The Hall, but the Hoyas responded with five more unanswered and built the gap up to 20 when Aaron Bowen completed an old-fashioned 3-point play with 11:30 remaining before the half.
Just as Georgetown had opened the game in emphatic fashion, the Pirates roared back with an extended run of their own; tallying 22 of the next 28 points after falling behind 27-7. Gibbs and Delgado engineered the rally, combining for 16 points during the stretch and it was a Delgado flush on the fast break that pulled SHU to within four at 33-29.
Georgetown pushed its advantage back to eight twice in the last five minutes of the period but Delgado came up with a stick-back in the final minute and Whitehead nailed his second triple six seconds before the buzzer to send The Hall into the locker room down just five at 43-38.
Eight of the Hoyas' 16 first half field goals came off Seton Hall turnovers, resulting in 20 points in the period. Delgado went into the break having already recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
Smith-Rivera and Copeland were the only Hoyas to score in double-digits, finishing with 23 and 20 respectively. Mobley wrapped up with 11 points and five rebounds for the Pirates.
Seton Hall will hit the road for the next three; beginning the stretch this Saturday, February 14 at Providence. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Eastern and the first meeting between The Hall and PC this season will be shown live nationally through the FOX Sports Networks with the YES Network serving as the local television home.
