SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Seton Hall men's soccer team (0-6-1, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) is back in action on Saturday night when it plays host to local rival St. John's (2-6-2, 0-0-1) for a BIG EAST conference tilt. Kick-off at Owen T. Carroll Field between the Pirates and Red Storm is set for 7 p.m. in a match presented by JAG Physical Therapy. The contest will mark The Hall's 2015 debut on the BIG EAST Digital Network and the FOX Sports GO app.
The Hall most recently hosted No. 1 Creighton on Saturday, Sept. 26 in both team's BIG EAST opener and pushed the nation's top team to the brink. After the Bluejays struck first, Andres Arcila (Cartagena, Colombia) found an equalizer for the Pirates in the 27th minute to send the contest to the half knotted at 1-1. The Hall then went ahead in the 72nd minute when Danny Bartok (Union, N.J.) ran down a long lob from Arcila and chipped it home to give the Pirates a late 2-1 advantage. The high-powered Bluejays were able to answer, equalizing with a penalty kick in the 80th minute before adding two more goals in the 82nd and 86th minutes to secure the result. The setback dropped the Hall to 1-3-1 all-time against the No. 1 team in the national polls.
Arcila was named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll after securing five points in two matches last week, notching three against Creighton and adding a goal at Monmouth on Sept. 22. He is tied with Samuel Geiler (Offenberg, Germany) for the team-high with two goals and leads The Hall with three assists and seven points on the year. The sophomore currently ranks fifth in the BIG EAST in assists and 10th in the league with 17 shots.
St. John's visits South Orange with a 2-6-2 record on the year but is unbeaten in its last three contests, including a scoreless draw with Marquette to open BIG EAST play last Saturday. The Red Storm completed an eight-game homestand on Tuesday night, toppling Central Connecticut by a score of 3-0. Mike Prosuk leads the St. John's attack with two goals, two assists and a team-high six points, followed by Filippo Ricupati with a 2-1-5 scoring line on the year. Dela Agbotse and Luis Esteves have each added three points for St. John's, which has scored eight goals through 10 matches. In net, Jordan Stagmiller has made seven starts and compiled a 1.32 GAA and a .763 save percentage with two shutouts.
The Hall is 12-21-3 all-time against St. John's in a series that dates back to the 1979 season and ran everyyear from 79-09 before a brief hiatus. The teams returned to the pitch in 2013 and have met twice since, a St. John's win in 2013 and a 1-0 Seton Hall victory in the 2014 regular season finale. Andrew LoManto scored the winner for The Hall in the most recent contest.
