BEALLSVILLE, MD. – Junior
Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) shot a 2-over-par, 74, in Tuesday’s final round to lead the Seton Hall women’s golf team to a third place finish at the 2013 Hoya Women’s Invitational. Collectively, the Pirates fired their low score for the tournament in round three, a 15-over-par, 303. For the three-round event, Seton Hall was 54-over-par with a 305-310-303-918 and finished 24 strokes behind the team champion, Campbell. Three BIG EAST competitors finished behind Seton Hall in the standings. St. John’s placed sixth among the field of 14 teams at 87-over-par. Georgetown was six strokes behind St. John’s, while Rutgers was one stroke behind Georgetown for eighth place. For the Pirates, it’s the seventh straight top-five team finish dating back to the fall season. “I’m really happy with the way we competed today,” said Head Coach Sara Doell. “A 303 is a great score and it’s always satisfying to edge any BIG EAST competition. We’ll be working hard over the next two weeks to gear up for the championship.” Basalone finished with her second-best tournament of the year. She finished sixth among 80 individual golfers with a 7-over-par, 73-76-74-223, eight strokes behind the individual champion, Harin Lee of St. John’s. “Hannah really put it all together for this tournament,” Doell said. “She had a few rough holes and yet she was still able to finish with a low number and top-10 placement.”
Freshman Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) was the second-best Pirate performer at Georgetown. She finished in a 19th place tie with a 17-over-par, 74-80-79-233.
SophomoreAli Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) tied for 24th with a 20-over-par, 80-79-77-236.
Sophomore Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) had a rough first round, but rebounded nicely in rounds two and three. She finished tied for 27th with a 21-over-par, 86-75-76-237.
Junior Christina Cantú (Houston, Texas) saved her best round for Tuesday and finished with a 23-over-par, 78-85-76-239 for a 32nd place tie.
Three Pirates made the trip to Beallsville to compete as individuals. Freshman Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) tied for 24th with a 20-over-par, 74-82-80-236. Junior Samantha Massei (Allen, Texas) was 56-over-par with a 91-94-87-272, while Haley Van Es (Granger, Ind.) finished with a 64-over-par, 98-90-92-280.
The Seton Hall women’s golf team will return to the links next weekend with the Brown Bear Invitational at Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington, R.I.
