NEWARK, N.J. - After he sent Seton Hall and Saint Peter's into overtime with a 3-pointer at the end of regulation, Pirates' senior Brian Oliver (Glassboro, N.J.) leveled the score again with 13 seconds left in the extra period. Peacocks' guard Desi Washington answered by knocking down a trey eight ticks later to give the visitors an 83-80 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Prudential Center.
Oliver scored the final five points of the overtime for Seton Hall (7-4) and finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds for his second career double-double. Washington made three of his career-high seven 3-pointers in the last five minutes to lift Saint Peter's to its first win over The Hall since 1995.
Pirates' senior center Eugene Teague (Vineland, N.J.) shot 6-for-9 and tallied 14 points to go with 11 rebounds, marking his fourth-consecutive double-double. Junior Brandon Mobley (Savannah, Ga.) chipped in nine points and nine rebounds. Saint Peter's standout Marvin Dominique scored 23 of his 25 points in second half and overtime to help the Peacocks keep pace.
In a fast paced overtime, the two teams were tied on four different occasions and were never separated by more than one possession. Seton Hall freshman Jaren Sina (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) nearly forced another period with his half-court try at the buzzer that bounced off the rim.
A lengthy Saint Peter's run to end the first half sent the two teams into the intermission deadlocked at 26 after a largely slow-paced stanza. An offensive flurry ensued in the second. It was the Peacocks who came out firing in the second half, scoring 12 of the first 19 points after halftime to open up a 38-33 edge with 16:32 to go in regulation. The Pirates battled back to knot the score at 40 as Teague completed an old-fashioned three-point play off a put-back at the 14:08 mark.
Neither team was able to create a gap larger than three points until Dominique converted down low to give the Peacocks a 64-59 advantage with 1:17 on the clock. Seton Hall guard Sterling Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.), who posted 17 points and three assists despite battling the stomach flu, took over down the stretch as the Pirates made a charge to level the score. Gibbs provided the response to the Dominique layup with a finish at the rim, and after Washington hit two free-throws he raced down the floor for another lay-in through contact.
Gibbs knocked down the free-throw, his ninth consecutive make from the line in the game, to bring Seton Hall to within two at 66-64. Washington missed the front end and Gibbs earned his way back to the line with a chance to tie, but he went down on the play and was forced to leave the game. Teague was selected by Saint Peter's to shoot the free-throws and converted 1-of-2 to make it a one-point game. Then after Jamel Fields missed both free-throws, Sina had a look for the tie but was rejected by Dominique.
Washington stepped up to sink two clutch free-throws to stretch it back to a three-point lead at 68-65. The Hall was able to in-bound into the front court and call a quick timeout. Then off the in-bound pass, Oliver faded back and drilled an off-balance shot just in front of half court to send it in to overtime where the Peacocks would eventually prevail.
The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for Seton Hall overall and is the first for the Pirates in their last 18 matchups with Saint Peter's.
The Pirates, who have played four games in the last 10 days, will get a breather before taking the floor again next Sunday when they welcome Eastern Washington to the Prudential Center for the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. and a live national telecast will be available on FOX Sports 1. A radio broadcast can be heard on 970 AM or through SHUPirates.com.
