SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - In a dominating Senior Day effort, the Seton Hall women's volleyball team shut out DePaul, 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 26-24), Sunday to complete the home portion of the 2012 schedule.
Sophomore Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) led the Pirates' offensive attack with a match-high 14 kills.
Junior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) led all players with 18 digs.
The Walsh Gym crowd said goodbye to seniors Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.), Kalie Marshall (North Royalton, Ohio), Kelly Palma (Stamford, Conn.), Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) and manager Chris Weathers, in a special post-match ceremony.
Utilizing a total team effort, the Pirates utterly dominated DePaul in the first two sets. In fact, the Blue Demons never led, nor was the game even tied before Seton Hall had a two-set lead.
After scoring the first five points of set one, the Pirates raced out to an 8-2 lead. The lead was extended to 12-4, before DePaul cut the lead to five at 15-10. Seton Hall however, responded with an 8-1 run to take a commanding 23-11 lead and would win set one, 25-13.
Set two was much of the same as the Pirates raced out to a 16-3 lead. The Blue Demons scored three of the next four points, but Seton Hall followed with a 5-0 spurt to take a massive 22-6 advantage. Stacey Manthorpe's kill ended the set in Seton Hall's favor, 25-12.
Seton Hall (18-8, 6-7) grabbed an early 8-3 lead in set three, but DePaul was determined to make the Pirates work for a sweep. In fact, just yesterday, the Blue Demons dropped the first two sets at Rutgers, but rallied to win sets three and four, before eventually falling in five sets. Hoping to rally similarly, DePaul went on a 6-1 run, to tie the score at nine. With the set tied at 13, the Blue Demons went on another 6-1 run to take their largest lead of the match, 19-14. Showing great resolve however, the Pirates slowly chipped away at the DePaul lead and a kill by Simona Sekulova (Auckland, New Zealand) tied the set at 23. After failing on their first match point, the Pirates finished the comeback on their second attempt with a kill by Stacey Manthorpe to end the set, 26-24, and complete the 3-0 sweep.
The victory is the 18th of the season overall for the Pirates, their most wins in a single-season since winning 20 in 2003.
Seton Hall will now take to the road for their final two games of the regular season. The Pirates will travel to Pittsburgh on Friday, Nov. 9, and Syracuse on Sunday, Nov. 11. After that, the top eight teams in the conference will compete for the 2012 BIG EAST Championship, Nov. 16-18, at Marquette University.
