PITTSBURGH, PA. - Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) matched her career-high of 18 kills, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team lost in four sets at Pittsburgh, 3-1 (13-25, 19-25, 27-25, 17-25), on Friday.
Manthorpe notched her 17th double-double of the season with 16 digs to go with the aforementioned 18 kills. She also had a team-best .263 hitting percentage. Sister Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) narrowly missed her ninth triple-double of the season, settling for nine kills to go with a team-best 28 assists and 12 digs.
In all, five Pirates reached double-figures in digs. Defensive Player of the Year candidate Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) again led Seton Hall with 28 digs. Senior Kalie Marshall (North Royalton, Ohio) had 16 digs, while Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) had 12.
Pittsburgh never trailed in the opening set, jumping out to a commanding 9-2 lead. With the Pirates trailing 18-12, the Panthers finished the set on a 7-1 run to thump Seton Hall, 25-13, in set one.
Seton Hall (18-9, 6-8) played a closer set two, but again never led. Pittsburgh grabbed a 4-3 lead and methodically extended it throughout the set. Trailing 22-15, the Pirates scored three straight to pull to within four points, but Pittsburgh ended the set with three of the final four points to win, 25-19, and take a commanding two-sets-to-one lead.
Set three was nip and tuck from the very start and included 15 ties and six lead changes. Trailing 20-17, Seton Hall scored three straight to tie the set at 20. From there, the teams would tie at every score until Shelbey Manthorpe's kill gave the Pirates a 26-25 lead, and Amanda Hansen's (Pewaukee, Wis.) kill won the set for the Pirates, 27-25.
Leading 7-4, Pittsburgh assumed control of the match by going on a 9-2 run and taking a commanding 16-6 lead. From there, the Pirates wouldn't get closer than seven points and lost set four, 25-17.
Seton Hall has just one match remaining in the 2012 regular season. The Pirates will travel to Syracuse for a match on Sunday, Nov. 11. Match time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The top eight teams in the conference will convene at Marquette University next weekend for the 2012 BIG EAST Championship.
