Syracuse Rallies to Down Volleyball

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Seton Hall women's volleyball team had a two-set lead at Syracuse, but the Orange rallied to defeat the Pirates in five sets, 3-2 (25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 25-27, 14-16), eliminating them from BIG EAST Championship contention on the regular season's final day.
With a final conference record of 6-9, Seton Hall finishes the regular season ninth in the BIG EAST. Only the top eight teams in the conference qualify for the BIG EAST Championship.
Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) again led the Pirates, narrowly missing her ninth triple-double of the season. The sophomore led the Pirates with 35 assists to go with a career-high 25 digs and matched her career-high with seven blocks.
Senior Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) tallied her third double-double of the season with 12 digs and 10 assists.
Freshman Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) tallied a career-high 14 kills to go with a team-best .423 hitting percentage and six blocks.
Sophomore Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) led the Pirates with 16 kills.
Junior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) recorded a team-best 27 digs, while Kalie Marshall (North Royalton, Ohio) matched her career-high with 18 digs.
The Pirates held a 2-0 set lead over the Orange, but fell in the final three heartbreaking sets by two points each.
Freshman Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.), playing in her first match in over a month, gave Seton Hall an early 5-2 lead in set one to set the tone early. The Pirates never trailed and slowly expanded their lead until winning by seven, 25-17, their largest lead of the set.
Seton Hall again grabbed an early lead in set two and never looked back. The Pirates led by as many as six points twice and Shelbey Manthorpe's kill ended the set, 25-21, and gave them a two-sets-to-none lead.
The Pirates appeared to be cruising towards a sweep as a Syracuse attack error gave them a commanding 9-3 lead early in set three. The Orange however, mounted a fierce comeback and an 11-2 run gave Syracuse a 14-11 lead. Seton Hall rallied, and Warren's ace tied the set at 15, the first of seven ties in the final moments of the set. With the score knotted at 23, Syracuse received kills from Emily Betteridge and Silvi Uattara to win set three, 27-25.
In set four, Syracuse jumped out to an early 11-4 lead. The Pirates however, chipped away methodically and had a chance to win it in the end. But Samantha Hinz's block with the Orange leading 26-25, evened the match at two apiece and forced a decisive fifth set.
Neither team took command early, but with the Orange leading 7-6, Syracuse scored four straight points to give them an 11-6 lead in set five. The resilient Pirates stormed back however, and scored five straight points to tie the set at 11 on a kill by Stacey Manthorpe. With the score tied at 14, Nicolette Serratore's kill put Syracuse ahead, and Gosia Wlaszczuk's kill ended the match and completed the comeback for the Orange.
