SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall men's soccer team came up short in its attempt to record a third-straight BIG EAST win on Saturday night, falling to No. 7 Notre Dame, 6-1.
The Pirates now stand at 6-7 overall and 2-2 in conference under first-year head coach Gerson Echeverry.
The Fighting Irish controlled the run of play from the outset, outshooting SHU 11-6 in the first half. ND manifested a number of opportunities early on resulting in four corner kicks in the first 20 minutes of the match. On the fourth, junior forward Leon Brown came up with the ball off the cross picked out his partner up-top Alex Priede who chipped it past Kevin Bonder (Whippany, N.J.) to give the Irish the 1-0 edge.
A few moments later, the Pirates manufactured a chance of their own from the corner flag. A feed from freshman midfielder Eric Lagg (Lafayette, N.J.) found the head of George Velasquez (Union City, N.J.) in a crowded penalty area, but his effort sailed wide of the right post.
After the opening strike, Bonder made three straight saves to keep the game close but Notre Dame would break through again in the 38th minute. Harrison Shipp collected a cross from Ryan Finley and tucked his shot inside the near post to double the advantage for the visitors.
The Hall would not go quietly into the break however, as Velasquez struck for the fourth time in the Pirates three BIG EAST games this season to pull one back for the Pirates. In the 42nd minute, the Union City native controlled a pass from sophomore midfielder Konrad Plewa (Maniowy, Poland) on the left side and powered a shot past ND keeper Alex Walsh to cut the deficit in half.
It is the second time that Plewa and Velasquez have linked up in conference play after the two combined on the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over Providence.
The assist was Plewa's team-leading fourth of the season. Velasquez now has 11 points on the year, 10 of which have come in league play.
ND answered right back as 29 seconds later, Nick Hodan found the back of the net for the fourth time in 2012 to push the lead back to two at 3-1 heading into the intermission.
Much of the first half hour in the second half was a possession battle, yielding limited looks at both ends of the field. Despite two threatening efforts from Max Garcia (Jersey City, N.J.) and another attempt on goal from Velasquez, it was the Irish who made the next imprint on the score sheet.
With just over 70 minutes gone, Harrison Shipp was again assisted by Finley as he placed a strike in the bottom corner and inside the far post to increase the gap to 4-1.
Notre Dame struck twice more in quick succession with Shipp and Finley again playing key roles. Finley, the reigning Disney/NSCAA Player of the Week added the fifth goal of the night for the visitors, increasing his conference-leading goal total to 11 in the process. Shipp tallied the sixth goal, completing his hat trick to push the final score line to 6-1 in favor of ND.
Bonder made five saves in defeat, his second-highest total in a game this season.
The win was the third-straight in conference play for Notre Dame (11-3, 3-2).
The Pirates will square off with a second consecutive top-10 opponent when they return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Connecticut. The Huskies entered this weekend ranked number six in the nation, but fell to the Pirates 1-0 last season at Owen T. Carroll Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Storrs, Conn.
