At the time of his induction, Benjamin Fields held the high-jump record with a leap of 7 feet, 2-1/2 inches. In 1972, he was the New York State High Jump Champion, and was the first high-jump athlete to use the “flop” style to win that title. While at Seton Hall in 1975, he was named IC4A Champion Outdoors and NCAA All-America. Listed among the top 10 high jumpers in the world from 1978–80, Fields won a silver medal in the high-jump at the Pan-American Games in 1979 and was on the 1980 U.S. Olympic team. He was the former co-holder of the U.S. high jump record at 7 feet, 6-1/2 inches, and was American Indoor Champion and Olympic Trials Champion with a leap of 6 feet, 5-3/4 inches.
