ST. LOUIS, MO. – Despite late chances, Seton Hall men's soccer fell 1-0 against Saint Louis on Saturday night at Hermann Stadium in the first ever meeting between the two programs.
After facing early offensive pressure, Seton Hall went down 1-0 early against the Billikens. Despite an offensive resurgence in the latter stages of the first half and the second half, a red card on Konstantin Donalies in the 64th minute quashed that Pirates' offense and proved too much to overcome by the end of 90 minutes.
With the loss, The Hall moves to 1-1-1 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
From the opening kick, the Pirates faced immense pressure from Saint Louis' pressing attack and defensive structures. The Hall fought to string possessions together in the early stages, but the Billikens' roving midfield quelled many of the Pirates' offensive opportunities.
On the back foot, the Pirates faced continual pressure from Saint Louis as the home side mounted shots at The Hall's net. In the 22nd minute, the Billikens broke through The Hall's defense off an in-swinging ball that was headed in for a goal by Grady Easton, putting Seton Hall down 1-0 midway through the opening half of play.
A string of five substitutions soon followed for The Hall as they searched for answers in the remainder of the opening half. Eventually, The Hall began to find momentum and pushed the ball in the attacking third with more ease. However, they could not find an equalizer before the halftime buzzer sounded, and the Pirates remained at a 1-0 deficit at the halftime break.
Coming out of halftime, the Pirates continued to present their revitalized offensive look as they chased the lead. In the 64th minute, however, a tackle on a Saint Louis breakaway by Konstantin Donalies handed the German defender a red card and put the Pirates down to ten men for the remainder of the game.
The Pirates' best offensive chance of the game came in the 82nd minute when Sam Bjork sent a header toward the far post that the Billiken's Abonnel narrowly saved. Seton Hall continued to hunt for the equalizer, but was unable to find an answer in the final minutes and fell 1-0 to Saint Louis.
