NEWARK, N.J. — Down three starters and despite a strong performance from Prince Aligbe who scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds, the Seton Hall men's basketball team fell to Butler, 84-54.
The Bulldogs (10-13, 3-9 BIG EAST) shot 50 percent from beyond the arc with six double-digit scorers. The Pirates (6-17, 1-11 BIG EAST) forced 17 Butler turnovers and cut their deficit to 15 midway through the second half but it wasn't enough to complete a comeback effort.
Chaunce Jenkins (11.4 ppg) missed his fifth consecutive game with a knee injury. Dylan Addae-Wusu (9.8 ppg) missed his fifth contest in the Pirates' last seven contests foot and ankle injuries. Scotty Middleton (6.0 ppg) missed tonight's game after suffering an ankle injury in the first half at DePaul.
How It Happened
In the early stages of their return to The Rock, the Pirates traded baskets with the Bulldogs thanks to strong paint play. After three minutes of play, a pair of jumpers from Prince Aligbe, as well as a single jumper from Garwey Dual, left the Pirates down only two, 8-6. Over the remainder of the half, however, The Hall struggled to find answers to Butler on both ends of the floor. Despite more offensive production from Aligbe, by halftime, the Pirates found themselves down 28, 48-20.
In the opening minutes of the second half, the Pirates' deficit grew to 32, 54-22. However, as the clock approached 16 minutes remaining in the game, the Pirates found offensive momentum. It started with Yacine Toumi layup. Quickly afterwards, an active Dual quickly collected a steal, then fed it to Aligbe for an easy dunk. David Tubek capped off the Pirates' explosive 23-to-6 run with a smooth three-pointer. When all was said and done, Pirates were only down 15, 60-45, with 9:41 left to play.
Despite the best effort from players like Jahseem Felton, Butler's prodigious night from behind the arc was ultimately too much for the Pirates to contain. As the final buzzer sounded, Seton Hall fell to Butler, 84-54.
