NEW YORK – Seton Hall swimming and diving standout Josephine McCartney has been named the female recipient of the 2023-24 BIG EAST Michael Tranghese Postgraduate Leadership Award, as selected by the BIG EAST Conference Academic Affairs Committee.
Â
The awards are given to one male and one female student-athlete from a BIG EAST-sponsored sport who have been admitted to a degree-granting or professional program for the following academic year and who have demonstrated leadership through excellence in academic credentials, athletic performance and depth of commitment to service within the institution or the community.
McCartney will receive a $5,000 scholarship, which may be applied to postgraduate study. The award is named for Michael Tranghese, the BIG EAST's first full-time employee who served as commissioner of the conference from 1990 to 2009 and embodied leadership and dedication from the league's inception.
McCartney, a native of Verona, Wis., completed a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and a double minor in Spanish and medical humanities while maintaining a perfect 4.0 undergraduate GPA. A standout in the classroom and in the community, she was a valedictorian candidate, earning Summa Cum Laude recognition all four collegiate years. She was tapped into a pair of honor societies, including Chi Alpha Sigma (National College Athlete Honor Society) and Sigma Delta Pi (National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society). McCartney has also been active in the Seton Hall community, most notably working as an ESL teacher at the Don Bosco Youth Center with Our Lady of the Valley Parish every week on Friday nights. On campus, she has been involved in the Servant Leader Scholars program. For her service on campus and in the community, McCartney was awarded with the 2023 Student Servant Leader Award, as well as the 2023 Maran Lougheed Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to the senior swimmer that best exemplifies her legacy.
