
Pirates Rally Twice, But Can't Outlast Marquette

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's volleyball team rallied from down a set twice, but ultimately fell to Marquette in five sets, 3-2 (16-25, 25-17, 13-25, 25-20, 9-15), in Walsh Gym on Friday.

The Hall had disappointing performances in both the first and third sets, scoring just 16 and 13 points respectively, but bounced back both times for convincing set victories to force a decisive fifth set. In the final stanza, the Pirates led 3-1, but Marquette answered with four straight points and never trailed again.

Sophomore Senna Roberts-Navarro (Honolulu, Hawaii) collected her second straight double-double with a team-high 13 kills to go with 14 digs. Senior Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) collected 33 assists, nine digs, three blocks and three kills.

Junior Mason Woo (Burbank, Calif.) had a tremendous match on the back line, recording a career-high 23 digs.

SET 1:
The Hall never led in the opening set. Ahead 16-13, Marquette went on a 8-1 run to grab a commanding 24-14 advantage. An attack error and a kill by Roberts-Navarro made it 24-16, but the Pirates couldn't get closer.Â

SET 2:
Seton Hall stormed back in the second set, holding Marquette to a -.041 attack percentage. Trailing 9-6, The Hall went on a 9-2 run, and a kill by Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) gave it a 15-11 advantage. The Golden Eagles cut their deficit to 19-16, but the Pirates finished out the set with a 6-1 burst to win the set, 25-17. Lucas had four of her 11 kills in the fourth set alone, with no attack errors.

SET 3:
The pendulum swung back in Marquette's favor in the third set, as the Golden Eagles held The Hall to a .000 attack percentage. Marquette led wire-to-wire, jumping out to a 5-1 lead, and never it looked back. The Hall cut their deficit to 8-7, but the Golden Eagles responded with a 9-1 run to grab a commanding 17-8 advantage. They cruised to a 25-13 victory in set three.

SET 4:
Unfazed, the Pirates rallied again in set four. It was the closest set of the match with seven ties and six lead changes. Down 7-5, The Hall went on a 7-2 spurt, and a block by Roberts-Navarro gave it a 12-9 lead. With the lead only 18-16, the Pirates scored five of the next six points, and a block by Klungel and Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkiye) put them on top, 23-17. The Hall had a team-best .257 attack percentage in the fourth set in route to a 25-20 victory to tie the match at two sets apiece.

In the decisive set, The Hall jumped ahead 3-1 early, but Marquette scored the next five points and never trailed again. A kill by Roberts-Navarro cut Seton Hall's deficit to 11-8, but the Golden Eagles closed out the match with four of the final five points.

The Pirates will return to action tomorrow when they host No. 6 Creighton at historic Walsh Gymnasium. The match is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
