
Pirates Rout St. John's, Sacred Heart in BIG EAST Match Play

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. – The Seton Hall men's golf team opened the 2022 spring season in a big way with convincing victories over St. John's and Sacred Heart in the 2022 BIG EAST Match Play event on Monday.

Seton Hall will now face Connecticut on Tuesday for the event title. The Huskies also went 2-0 with victories over Creighton and Butler on Monday.

SETON HALL def. St. John's (5-0-1)
The Pirates opened the season in impressive fashion, not losing a single match to local rival St. John's in the first match of the event. Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas) won his match 3&2 over Peicheng Chen. Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) and Wenliang Xie (Zhaoqing, China) went the distance with their competitors, each winning 1UP. Senior Deven Ramachandran (San Rafael, Calif.) needed only 12 holes to win his match in a rout, 7&6. Freshman Angus O'Brien (Barwon Heads, Australia) defeated his opponent, Doug Beney, in convincing fashion, 4&3. Wanxi Sun (Danville, Calif.) tied St. John's Tyler Gerbavsits.

SETON HALL def. Sacred Heart (5-1-0)
The Pirates improved to 2-0 in match play on the young season and advanced to the event final with a 5-1-0 victory over Sacred Heart in the semifinals. The Hall got convincing victories at the top of its lineup with Acevedo winning 6&5 and Tait victorious at 5&4. Sun fell to Sacred Heart's Marcus Lim, 3&2, for The Hall's first match loss of the day, but the remaining Pirates were victorious. Xie won 3&2, Ramachandran went the distance for a 1UP victory and O'Brien clobbered his opponent, 6&5.

The six-team tourney – which includes– will feature two matches for each team on Monday, with the teams with the most points meeting Tuesday for the tourney title. The remaining four teams will also meet in Tuesday matches to determine third through sixth place.
