FAIRFAX, VA. – Senior Maggie Cvelbar (Euclid, Ohio) had a double-double as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team swept William & Mary, 2-0 (25-18, 25-22, 26-24), to open the George Mason Invitational on Friday.
Â
Cvelbar recorded a match-high 28 assists to go with 11 digs, two kills and two blocks in a strong all-around match. Offensively, Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Reece Koehler (Stillwater, Minn.) and Emilee Turner (Kaysville, Utah) combined for 24 kills and only three attack errors.
Â
SET 1:
Trailing 8-6 in set one, the Pirates went on a 13-3 run, capped by a Gasser kill that gave them a commanding 19-11 advantage. William & Mary scored four of the next five points to cut their deficit to just five points, but the Griffins couldn't get closer. A kill by Koehler put The Hall in set point, and another by classmate Julia Wilkins (Mason, Ohio) ended the set in The Hall's favor, 25-18.
Â
SET 2:
the score tied at 17 in set two, The Hall scored two straight, and block assists by Cvelbar and Amanda Rachwal (Bethlehem, Pa.) gave the Pirates a 19-17 lead and forced a Griffin timeout. The set remained close, but William & Mary never drew even again. Leading 23-21, a pair of kills by Turner won the set for the Pirates, 25-22.
Â
SET 3:
William & Mary jumped out to a 13-10 lead in set three, but Seton Hall responded with a 6-2 run, and a service ace by Elizabeth Sottung (Westfield, N.J.), but it on top, 16-15. With the score tied at 19 however, the Griffins scored three straight to grab a 22-19 advantage and force a Seton Hall timeout. The break did wonders for the Pirates, as they scored three straight to tie the set at 22. The Griffins however, jumped back ahead and entered set point at 24-23, but a kill by Gasser tied the set at 24, block assists by Koehler and Turner put the Pirates in match point, 25-24, and a William & Mary attack error won it for them, 26-24.
