CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Three Pirates shot an even-par, 72, in Sunday's final round to lift the Seton Hall men's golf team to a third place tie at the 2019 BIG EAST Championship.
Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas), Gen Nagai (Mandaue Cebu City, Philippines) and Deven Ramachandran (San Rafael, Calif.) all shot their best round on Sunday, an even-par, 72. Both Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) and Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.) shot a 3-over-par, 75, proof of good play from the entire lineup in round three.
Yeom was the best Pirate golfer for the tournament, tying for eighth place with a 76-70-75-221. The senior finished five strokes behind the individual champion, Xavier's Garrett Wood. The finish was Yeom's 15th career top-10 finish, which ties for fifth-most in Seton Hall history.
For a second straight day, the Pirates' team score significantly improved, shaving six strokes off their second round score. The Hall registered a 3-over-par, 291, in Sunday's final round, the team's lowest single round since the tournament moved to Callawassie Island, and its lowest BIG EAST Championship round since shooting a 290 in the third round of the 2010 event at Innisbrook. The effort enabled the Pirates to move up one more spot in the standings to tie Butler for third place at 35-over-par. They shot a 311-297-291-899 and ended the event 27 strokes behind the team champion, Marquette, who won the title by an impressive 24 strokes over second place DePaul.
Seton Hall's total score of 899 is the lowest in its six years at Callawassie Island.
Acevedo began his final round with three straight birdies and was 4-under-par through 12 holes. Unfortunately, the sophomore finished his round with a trio of bogeys, but he still finished at even-par. For the tournament, Acevedo tied for 17th place overall with an 11-over-par, 78-77-72-227.
Ramachandran also had an incredible start to his final round. The freshman was 5-under-par through six holes, which included an eagle on the par-5, third hole. He had a bumpy finish to the front nine, but was consistent on the back nine to finish at even-par. For his first-ever BIG EAST Championship, Ramachandran impressed, tying for 22nd place with a 13-over-par, 79-78-72-229.
Tait had a trio of birdies to go with 10 pars in route to a 3-over-par, 75, on Sunday. For the three-day event, he tied for 26th with a 15-over-par, 84-72-75-231.
Playing in his final collegiate round, Nagai used six birdies to sprint out to a 3-under-par score through 16 holes. Callawassie's infamous No. 17 and No. 18 took the three strokes back, but Nagai still finished with an even-par, 72. For the tournament, he shot a 17-over-par, 78-83-72-233.
