11/28/2019 11:41:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Nassau, Bahamas - Senior All-America candidate Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) scored 18 points, and junior Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) had 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists in a terrific all-around effort as the No. 13 Seton Hall men's basketball team rebounded to defeat Southern Mississippi, 81-56, Thursday night in the Battle 4 Atlantis consolation bracket.
The Pirates will now face Iowa State in the fifth-place game Friday night at 7 p.m. It will be the first of two consecutive games against the Cyclones with the second taking place in Ames, Iowa on Sunday, Dec. 8.
Turning Point
Seton Hall led for all but 17 seconds of the game, but the Golden Eagles hung around for a bit until the Pirates comfortably took a double-digit lead in the second half when Mamukelashvili had a put-back slam and then assisted on a sophomore Jared Rhoden (Baldwin, N.Y.) fastbreak layup following a turnover to make the score 50-36.
Southern Miss was within 11, 64-53, with under seven minutes to go when a broken play led to junior Shavar Reynolds, Jr. (Manchester, N.J.) finding Mamukelashvili on the wing for a late-shot clock triple. Powell made a pair of free throws on the next possession, and then the Pirates defense created two turnovers that both led to fastbreak layups to push the lead to 20, 73-53, and out of the Golden Eagles' reach.
The Pirates ended the game on a 17-3 run.
