
Pirates Fall to No. 14 Pittsburgh

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seniors Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.) and Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) recorded 10 kills apiece, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to No. 14 Pittsburgh, 3-0 (20-25, 18-25, 21-25), on Saturday.
The Pirates, playing just shy of 12 hours after their thrilling five-set comeback win over VCU showed plenty of fight against the national power, recording an attack percentage of .241 for the match, but ultimately fell in straight sets.
SET 1:
The first set was close throughout, but Pittsburgh took control late. With the score tied at 15, the Panthers scored three straight and never trailed again. A kill by Emilee Turner (Kaysville, Utah) cut the Pitt lead to one, 18-17, but The Hall never got closer as Pittsburgh went on to win set one, 25-20.
SET 2:
Thelen had five kills in set two alone, but the rest of the Pirate offense had difficulty. The Hall scored the first three points of the set, but Pitt quickly regrouped, and a 7-1 run put the Panthers in front 7-4. A kill by Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) gave the Pirates a 17-16 lead, but Pitt responded with a set-ending 9-1 run to win set two, 25-18.
SET 3:
Set three proved to be the closest of the match, featuring seven ties and three lead changes, but ultimately the result was the same. Neither team took a lead of greater than two points until the final moments of the set. Trailing 18-16, Pittsburgh went on an 8-1 run to enter match point, 24-19. The Pirates staved off two set points, but fell, 25-21.

- Senior Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) had a team-high 14 assists to go with seven digs.

- Seton Hall recorded a .241 attack percentage for the match, while Pittsburgh attacked at .333.
- The Hall had 32 team kills, while Pittsburgh had 50.
- The Pirates totaled 29 team digs, while the Pittsburgh had 40.
- Seton Hall falls to 3-2 on the young season, while Pittsburgh improves to 5-0.
- With the loss, Seton Hall falls to 5-26 all-time against Pittsburgh.
- Coffey played in her 98th consecutive match, which leads all active Pirates. She has not missed a match since arriving in South Orange prior to the 2015 season.
- With 13 assists today, Cvelbar has surpassed the 1,000-assist mark for her career.
