Carrington's Historic Night Lifts The Hall to Victory
2/16/2017 12:54:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Newark, N.J. – Junior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) exploded for a career-high 41 points, including 10 in the final 41 seconds as the Seton Hall men's basketball team earned a thrilling 87-81 victory over visiting No. 20 Creighton Wednesday night at Prudential Center. Carrington's 41 points are the most by a Pirate since Jeremy Hazell posted 41 on Dec. 26, 2009 against West Virginia.
In addition to his scoring production, Carrington also totaled seven assists, five rebounds and four steals on top of an 18-for-22 output at the free throw line. Meanwhile, junior Angel Delgado (Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic) picked up his 20th double-double of the season with a 17-point 17-rebound showing on 7-of-11 shooting and notched his 1,000th career point in the process. Junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) was the third Seton Hall (16-9, 6-7 BIG EAST) scorer in double-figures with 18 points.
Marcus Foster scored a team-best 25 points and totaled six boards and six assists for Creighton (21-5, 8-5 BIG EAST).
Turning Point
Seton Hall took a 41-40 lead into the halftime, but Creighton used a 13-5 run over the first 4:47 out of the break to take a 53-46 lead, its biggest of the game, with 15:13 remaining.
The Pirates immediately responded with an 8-0 run capped by a triple from freshman Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) to give The Hall a 54-53 advantage with 13:25 to go. The teams then traded baskets down the stretch in a game that featured eight ties and 16 lead changes.
Delgado converted a layup following an offensive rebound at 2:37 to give The Hall a 76-74 advantage before adding another point on a free throw on the next Pirate possession. Foster then hit a pair of free throws to draw within one of The Hall, 77-76, with 1:27 remaining.
Then Carrington took over. He scored 10 points and went 6-for-6 at the free throw line over the final 41 seconds. The Pirates led 83-79 with 19 seconds to go when Carrington stole the ball by diving to the floor on an inbound pass before collecting himself and hammering down a monster dunk that brought Prudential Center to its feet and sealed the game.
Inside the Numbers
- Carrington's 41-point output is the most of any BIG EAST player this season and nine more than any other individual scorer in a conference game. It is tied for 14th all-time in a BIG EAST conference game, and is only the 26th time in league history that anyone has scored 40 or more in a conference game.
- It is the first 40-point game for a Pirate since Sterling Gibbs scored 40 against Illinois State on Nov. 24, 2014. It is also the most points since Jeremy Hazell posted 41 versus West Virginia on Dec. 26, 2009. Additionally, it is tied for the most points in a BIG EAST game in school history, joining:
- Jeremy Hazell vs. West Virginia (Dec. 26, 2009)
- Terry Dehere vs. St. John's (Feb. 17, 1993)
- Marco Lokar vs. Pittsburgh (Feb. 20, 1990)
- The 41-point effort is also tied for eighth overall in Seton Hall single-game scoring history.
- Carrington's 18 free throws made ranks fifth in the school's single-game history and tied for fourth in BIG EAST conference history (conference games only).
- Carrington has been dominant in recent games with Creighton. He scored 27 or more in each of the last three meetings and is now averaging 31.7 points against the Bluejays over that stretch.
- Both teams shot well from the field as the Pirates were 51.0 percent and the Bluejays were 45.5 percent. From three-point range, SHU was 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) and CU was 11-of-26 (42.3 percent). The Pirates are now 12-0 this season when they outshoot their opponent.
- The Pirates went 28-for-39 at the charity stripe while Creighton finished 10-of-13. SHU improves to 11-2 when they record more free throw attempts.
- Effort on the glass was another important factor for The Hall as they held a 42-25 rebounding advantage and finished with a positive margin for the 21st time in 25 games this season.
- Delgado continued to be a force in the paint and took control in the second half when he scored 15 points and pulled down 12 boards after totaling two points and five rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
- Delgado now has 20 double-doubles on the season, 43 for his career. He is the nation's leading rebounder, averaging 13.2 per game.
- Delgado also became the 42nd student-athlete in Seton Hall program history to record 1,000 career points and sits at 1,005 following his 17-point night.
- With his 18 points, Rodriguez posted his eighth BIG EAST game of at least 15 points this season. He is the team's leading scorer in conference at 16.5 points per game.
