SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Sharay Barnes (Swarthmore, Pa.) and junior Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) combined for 33 kills and just four attack errors as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team defeated Villanova in four sets, 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 25-23), on Wednesday.
Barnes was fabulous registering a season-high with 17 kills, just two attack errors and a team-best .577 attack percentage. Thelen added 16 kills, only two attack errors and a .359 attack percentage. She also had three blocks.
SET 1:
Seton Hall had to rally from a significant deficit at the start of the first set as Villanova jumped out to a 10-3 lead. Trailing 15-8, the Pirates went on a 10-2 run, and a block by Madison Salkowski (Cold Spring, Ky.) gave them their first lead of the match, 18-17. With the score tied at 22, back-to-back kills by Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.) put The Hall in set point, 24-22, and a Villanova attack error put set one in the win column for the Pirates.
SET 2:
Despite the close score, Seton Hall never trailed in set two. With the score tied at 12, the Pirates scored four straight, and a kill by Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) gave them a 16-12 lead and prompted a Villanova timeout. The Wildcats cut the Pirate lead to 22-19, but two kills by Thelen put The Hall in set point, and Mason's seventh kill of the set gave it a 25-22 win. In one of the more impressive single sets of the season, the Pirates had 20 kills and a .474 attack percentage.
SET 3:
Just like Seton Hall never trailed in set two, it never led in set three. Villanova again got off to a quick start, scoring nine of the first 13 points, but this time, they never looked back. The Pirates cut the Wildcat lead to four late, 22-18, but couldn't draw closer in a 25-19 loss.
SET 4:
Villanova jumped out to a 10-6 lead and forced an early Seton Hall timeout. Trailing 12-8, the Pirates went on a 7-2 run, and a kill by Barnes put the Pirates in front, 15-14. Clinging to a 23-22 lead, Seton Hall got a pair of kills from Thelen, sandwiched around a Pirate service error, to clinch a 25-23 set four win, and a four-set match victory.
