MILWAUKEE - Five Seton Hall men's basketball teams scored in double figures, led by junior Sterling Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and his 24 points and career-high 10 assists, as the Pirates drained a season-high 13 three-pointers in an 80-70 road win at Marquette Wednesday night at BMO Harris Bradley Center. Gibbs was responsible for six of the 13 three-pointers, and sophomore Jaren Sina (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) and freshman Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each buried three.
Joining Gibbs in the 20-point club was Carrington, who was 7-for-10 from the field and 3-for-4 from both the three-point line and the free throw line to finish with 20 points. Senior Brandon Mobley (Savannah, Ga.) had 13 points and nine rebounds, Sina had 11 points and a season-high six assists and freshman Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) turned in his seventh double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Pirates, who have now claimed two of their last three road games and have improved to 14-6 overall and 4-4 in BIG EAST play. Marquette's losing streak rises to four games as the Golden Eagles fall to 10-10 overall and 2-6 in the conference. This was Seton Hall's first-ever win at the Bradley Center.
A four-point contest at halftime, the game turned in Seton Hall's favor with outstanding shooting to start the second half as the Pirates went on a 28-8 run in the first 7:09. Carrington got the scoring started with a triple after the Pirates got a stop on defense. Then after the Pirates forced a pair of Marquette turnovers, Gibbs hit a three-pointer and then drove to the basket and dished off to Mobley for a monster dunk and a 17-point lead, 47-30. On the next possession, Sina found Mobley for a second straight dunk and a 49-30 advantage.
Marquette went without a field goal made for over five minutes, and Gibbs made the Golden Eagles pay with three consecutive three-pointers at 14:19, 13:37 and 12:51, the last a seemingly back-breaking shot that put the Pirates up by 24, 60-36.
Marquette fought back with an 11-2 run, but Gibbs was there again to silence the Golden Eagles. Coming out of a timeout, Gibbs found the bottom of the net with his fifth three-pointer of the half and sixth of the game to give The Hall a 65-50 lead with 6:42 to play.
The Golden Eagles got within 12 three more times, but Delgado pushed the momentum permanently towards Seton Hall with a put-back of his own miss at 2:52, and the Pirates defense held Marquette to 4-for-11 shooting in team's final four-and-a-half minutes.
The Pirates had gotten off to a great start in the first half as well, taking advantage of Marquette's zone defense to knock down six triples in the first 20 minutes. Sina got the scoring started on the game's first possession, and he remained hot, nailing two more and also dishing out three assists.
Marquette's largest lead of the game was only two and it came at 11:28 on Luke Fischer's jumper to make it 18-16. Carrington nailed a jumper on the next possession to tie it, and the teams went on to tie six times in the half before Gibbs' first three-pointer at 4:03, his first points of the game in fact, put the Pirates on top for what proved to be for good. Mobley's pair of free throws with 40 seconds remaining gave the Pirates a 32-28 edge into halftime, setting up the big second half momentum swing.
Seton Hall shot exactly 50 percent from both the field and the three-point line (13-for-26). The Pirates surpassed their previous season high of 12 three-pointers, set vs. Illinois State on Nov. 24, 2014. The Pirates had outstanding ball movement, generating a season-high 23 assists against 15 turnovers while they also out-rebounded Marquette 38-32.
Matt Carlino led Marquette with 16 points.
The Pirates are back in action Saturday when they host Xavier at Prudential Center at noon. FOX Sports 1 will televise the game, and Gary Cohen and Dave Popkin will have the radio call on AM970, Sirius 134 and XM 202. For tickets to the game, click here.
