ANNAPOLIS, MD. - Sophomore Kevin O'Brien (Wexford, Pa.) shot a 5-under-par, 66, in Sunday's final round to lead the Seton Hall men's golf team to the championship of the Navy Fall Classic.
O'Brien's 66 ties him for the third-lowest par-71 single-round score in Seton Hall history. He finished tied for third among 56 individual golfers with a 4-under-par, 72-66-138. His 4-under-par ties him for the seventh-most strokes under par for a tournament in Seton Hall history and his 138 matches the best par-71 tournament score ever for a Pirate.
Collectively, Seton Hall fired a 1-over-par, 285, in round two, to edge Delaware by one stroke for the team championship. The Pirates finished the event at 1-over-par with a 284-285-569. The team title is the first for Seton Hall since winning the Manor Intercollegiate on April 14, 2012.
"It is extremely gratifying to see their hard work produce results," said head coach Clay White. "I'm proud of how we were able to persevere amidst a talented field. I'm excited to see what our future brings."
Newcomer Ryan Snouffer (Sparta, N.J.) also had a sub-par tournament. He finished 1-under-par with a 68-73-141 to tie for seventh overall.
Senior JT Harper (Pebble Beach, Calif.), tied for 13th overall with a 3-over-par, 71-74-145. Only one stroke behind Harper, Lloyd Jefferson Go (Guadalupe Cebu City, Philippines) tied for 16th place with a 4-over-par, 74-72-146. It's the first time in the last seven tournaments that Go hasn't led the Pirates, but he played well enough to.
Rounding out the Pirates' scoring, junior David Cha (Carrollton, Texas) finished at 6-over-par with a 73-75-148.
The two-round event took place at the par-71 Naval Academy Golf Course. In addition to Seton Hall and two teams from host Navy, seven other teams vied the title including Brown, Cornell, Delaware, Georgetown, Saint Joseph's Towson and Villanova.
Seton Hall will return to the links in two weeks for three rounds of the Hartford Hawks Invitational, Sept. 22-23.
