INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - The Seton Hall women's soccer team fell in its second BIG EAST road contest of the opening weekend, dropping a 3-0 decision at Butler on Sunday.
The Hall (3-6-2, 0-2-0) previously fell to Providence in the conference opener and has now sustained two consecutive losses after closing non-league play with a four-match unbeaten streak.
The victory was the first for Butler (7-5-0, 1-1-0) in the brief two-year history between the two programs and the Bulldogs have now won five of their six home matches to this point in the campaign.
Butler totaled six shots in the first half, forcing Seton Hall keeper Illissa Blackshear (West Orange, N.J.) into action four times. Blackshear came off her line to shut down the angle on Annie Weber in the 15th minute and less than two minutes later, the West Orange native sprawled out to deny Butler leading scorer Elise Kotsakis who had worked an opening near the top of the area.
With slightly less than 20 minutes gone in the period however, preseason ALL-BIG EAST selection Sophia Maccagnone pulled a low shot across her body from nearly 25 yards out that Blackshear was unable to track down and keep from trickling inside the left post.
Kotsakis would later get another opportunity to add to her seven-goal tally but Blackshear came up with the answer, using two hands to send the rebound clear of danger.
Blackshear got the better of Kotsakis one more time in the opening moments of the second frame but the Bulldogs would double their lead when Kelly Mahoney got her head on a lofted pass from Stephanie Kaylor in the 50th minute, re-directing it inside the near post.
Senior Kristina Meier (Paramus, N.J.) got a look at goal for the Pirates in the 67th minute off a corner from Amanda Gulli (Toms River, N.J.) but Butler keeper Jayne Heinrich was there to make the save.
Butler would add a late insurance goal when Maccagnone went to ground to win a ball at the top of the area, poking it to teammate Hannah Farley on the left wing. Farley got a shot away that escaped the diving attempt from Gina Maiorana (Street, Md.), who had relieved Blackshear in the 60th minute, and gave the Bulldogs their third score of the match.
Seton Hall entered BIG EAST play having allowed more than one goal on just a single occasion in its nine non-conference matches.
The Pirates will return home to host DePaul on Thursday, October 2 in their first of four scheduled BIG EAST home matches. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Owen T. Carroll Field.
